Having trouble getting the humidity correct in my fruiting chamber - perlite question
    #13973994 - 02/16/11 02:33 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hello All!

This is my first fruiting chamber and I'm trying a simple perlite setup.  I used PF cakes and they should be ready to transfer in a day or two.  I am preparing a 50-qt clear plastic tub - I filled it with about 2" of perlite.  I guess it's a fine or medium grade.  I also cut a piece of plexiglas for drip protection as described in the PF-tek.

Yesterday, I put the perlite in dry, and my intention was to pour in enough water to fill the bottom 1/2" or so of perlite with water.  What I found, however, is that I couldn't really tell how much water was going in and how high it was filling.  In hindsight I probably would wet the perlite first, but I'm here now.

It made it up to 93% humidity last night, then stalled. Today I poured in some more water, but now all the perlite seems to be resting on a layer of water (there's about 1/4" of water, then the perlite is sort of resting above it). Should I dump the extra water?  The humidity raised to 99% pretty quickly and now there is condensation on the sides.  I also didn't have any weight on the lid yesterday so I put a little on today in case of a leak.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I have a suggestion for you.....Take a shotgun and shoot all 6 sides of your Fruiting Chamber.

are you using a shotgun fruiting chamber?  sounds like you are following an old tek.

drip shields are an obsolete notion.

you should have wet the perlite first, but honestly you need to look up shotgun chamber or sgfc

Don't read the garbage in "mushroom info/ how to grow mushrooms" honestly I don't even know why that information is still there.  Only get your info from the forums.  Get rid of the drip shield, make 1/4 inch holes every two inches on ALL SIX SIDES of your tub.  That means the top and bottom as well as all the sides.  Now fill it with FIVE INCHES of perlite.  Don't do it indoors if you don't have to, the dust SUCKS.  You can wet it before putting it in the tub, or do it the easy way and put it in dry then use a hose or some other way to get it wet.  Soak it.  Let it drip 'till it's done dripping, and it's ready.

Edit:  When I say soak it, I mean get it very wet, it doesn't absorb water.

SGFC FTW!!!!! it was like turning on a light switch when I finally gave up on my "I'll show you" attitude. Unless you understand gaseous densities and barometric pressures and what not, or have a few years experience, just drill the holes and sit back and enjoy.

I challenge you to challenge yourself more! When you feel complacent and ready to hang it up, challenge yourself to get over it! If you fail, don't look at it as you didn't succeed, look at it as you would a rock face you're trying to climb. Stand back, wayyyy back, and look at it and plot another path. If you can't find one, shuffle down the way a little, a little change of scenery or a view from a different angle may give you the insight you need.

Okay - will convert it to SGFC, and do 3-4" of damp perlite.  Thanks for the help!
