Appalachian Trail Thru Hike

I want to do it on less than $4,000 and try to complete it in 6 months....
how much water do you pack at a single time when you plan such an excursion?
i'd try to resupply food every week or so...by mailing ahead or hitting towns along the way... but it'd be hard to carry a lot of water i assume.
how plentiful is fresh water along the trail?
i know i've got a lot of researching to do...but i'd really like to do this with in the next 5 years.

Not from starting in Georgia...But I back pack in the Smokeys for long distances quite often
SO yes and no?
Edit: about water and food;
Water along the smokey mountain trail is amazing...Always cold, always moving...The purest water around
I like back packing there because You dont have to bring any water just a cup...Ill usually filter it through a shirt and not impurify the water with iodine...Its not really necessary for that area anyways but as far as outside and before you get into the national park..That might be a different story...
One of the best things I like to bring back packing is a grain that can be cooked fast and stored in a large amount without being heavy... Ive found Cous cous to be a very good answer to this...High in protein and Carbs but it cooks almost instantly...Unlike rice which is heavier and takes a good while to cook...Brown rice anyways...
I would take a big sack of cous cous and a small lightweight pot...You could make that last for a while....Also the fishing around the smokeys is amazing...Rainbow trout ez good...

I'm going to hike the Appalachian for a few weeks in late March. It will be epic - we will have weed and mushrooms, and perhaps a little bit of alcohol to keep us warm. I hope I see a Shroomery member, but I don't know how that is possible

I mean...All the primitive campsites have bear pulleys...Also You should eat right before sundown and clean up your scent of food instead of cooking stuff at night and spilling it everywhere...
But I wouldn't really be worried about the bears
What exactly are you referring to...The bears simply being around the National park?

Hey mouse, are you still a novice hiker? Hiking the entire App trail at once is something you MUST physically and mentally prepare yourself for! If you haven't done too many long distance hikes, I would seriously think about doing a portion of it first. Go out there for a month and and see how you like it. If you have a lot of experience already.... Then go for it!!!!!
By any chance have you ever read the book, a hike in the woods?

never read it. i'm assuming it's good since you brought it up?
i'm still a novice...and i won't be able to do this for about 5 years.
this april i'm going to Big Bend and we're planning on hiking about 20 miles in a 3 day weekend. that'll be my biggest trek so far. i know that's 100 times less than the Appalachian but it's a start.

I mean that is a good thing to think about...They are defensive animals not offensive...SO its unlikely that they will see you and just charge...
You need to be super aware when you are hiking through certain areas especially around Berry bushes since that and other plants are the main diet of bears in the smokeys...
A lot of times if there is violent bear activity in an area they will tell you about it...I would just be aware and while you are walking in certain areas that you can't see completely just make noise so they know you are coming...
Dude...Ive been shitting on a log when a big black bear walked right in front of me and just went on his way...They are actually quite non offensive animals unless surprised or hungry

That would be awesome to do. I would love to do that hike.
I'm planning a hike this summer. We're planning to get on a bus, go to a national park in my province, camp out and do the hike in the morning.

We are starting just west of Gettysburg and heading south. Plan on hiking for around 2 or 3 weeks depending on supplies and such. I hope we can get a ride back because it'll mean we can walk longer.
Two days ago was the first really warm day here so my two buddies and I did a nice hike on these railroad tracks we know. Hiked for about 10 hours (which is pretty brutal on railroad tracks, let me tell you), met some nice people in a little town and slept out under the full moon and stars. Watching the moon set and the sun rise over the Susquehanna River made the cold, cold night worth it.

Not a good idea. The bacteria that cause Giardia are from animal feces in the river, probably the more remote you go into the woods the more animals there are going to be.

Water purification drops/tablets aren't too expensive, either. The water up here in PA is so bad I like to boil and use tablets on it.

I'm thinking that i want to do this thru hike with my main source (or only source) of sustenance to be cannabis seeds.
can i get away with eating only cannabis seeds and drinking water days at a time?
i know i'll have the occasional cheeseburger and beer when i get into small towns along the way.

Why on earth would you do that? I'd definitely pick a food that contains little to no water at all, so it doesn't weigh you down and you can add the water where you find it. TA's couscous sounds like a perfect plan, but I have good experiences with brown rice and good old fashioned flour as well (the longer cooking time being the drawback; granted).
Supplement with beef jerky and things you find on the trail. Nettles are usually an abundant and healthy vegetable, as are some allium species. Berries and mushrooms as well if you know what you're doing. Fish if you have the time and opportunity, and hunt if you're into it.

On second thought, I'd consider supplementing those seeds with a source of carbohydrates. You will survive on just hemp seeds, but I suspect that you'll feel better if you add some extra carbs into the mix.

I have no idea, but take into account that you'll be burning a lot of energy, depending on the distance you walk each day, the weight of your pack and any other activities (setting up camp, collecting firewood, etc.) It also depends on how much fat you want/can afford to lose, and how much hunger you're willing to experience. Again, for a couple of days, you could live on less, but you'll be amazed at how hungry a man can get in just 3 days, even packing a reasonable amount of food. Using this calculator and a person of 185cm/75kg (slim/normal Western male of average-ish height), assuming that he'll be doing 12 hours of resting, 3 hrs very light excercise, 5 hrs light, 3 moderate and 1 heavy (rough estimate of some light hiking in not too mountainous or hilly area), you end up with a daily energy requirement of about 4000 cal. Note how far this is from your 2kcal estimate. The test person I entered in the calculator needs about 1900cal/day just for the upkeep of his body.
I'd strongly recommend not complicating things too much for your first (?) thru-hike. Take no risk when it comes to water, shelter and food. Things can get complicated even if you're well-prepared, and at times like those, you'll be pulling the hairs off your head for making awkward decisions in preparation.
Don't underestimate the effort you're going to put into just staying warm at night, properly hydrated during the day and well-fed in the evening. But heck, maybe you know all this. Just be prepared, that's all I'm saying.

i want to stay away from foods that require cooking.
i plan on using a bivy sack....and don't see myself making fire for anything other than social reasons.
i don't really want to take a stove either. the most preparation for a meal on the trail, that i'd like to involve myself in, would be MREs or something like a protein shake.
eating a mixture of different types of seeds appeals to me.

Nothing wrong with old-fashioned nuts and berries. Make any mix of peanuts, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, etc. and raisins, dried cranberries, apricots, mango, etc.
The drawback is that nuts tend to be heavy, that's why foods that can be reconstituted or cooked on the trail tend to be popular; as long as there's sufficient water to be found along the trail you don't have to carry the water in the food around. So that's why hikers carry around flour, rice and couscous.
Backpack weight is your biggest enemy.

Protein is always underrated when hiking long distances. When I had a tuna packet or a protein bar at the beginning of the days hike it made my hike so much better. I think you should do some or one week long hike(s) then you will get a feel for what you are carrying. When you do the appalachian trail you are going to have to carry a week or more food worth at a time, which means that it might have to be freeze dried, really light weight, and non perishable. I saw one guy on the colorado trail who only ate fresh foods and never cooked. Personally a hot meal on a cold night is exactly what I needed and wanted after 20+ miles per day... Go on some longer hikes and see what works best for you. And I agree, backpack weight is your biggest enemy and nuts aren't cheap.

Thru-Hiking you need to consume 2-3x the normal calories you usually do. That means you need to eat ~4,000-5,000 calories per DAY to not lose all your weight on the trail. You are probably not going to want to survive solely on hemp seeds - although I am SURE it could be done. You probably won't get enough calories. Supplement and snack with hemp seed sure. Toss it in your trail mix. But you need other calorie rich foods or you will burn out fast.
You also want to consume at least a gallon of water a day, bare minimum. Finding water of the AT is ~very~ easy though. You shouldn't ever need to carry more than a half day/day's supply. There are little stores and stops right off the trail all along the way, natural tapped springs... water is abundant on the AT.

Thanks shroomism.
Right now I'm having a hard time imagining what it'll be like carrying all that weight with somewhere to around 5 days of food at a time and 1 gallon of water at a time.

I would start hiking around with weights on your back to get used to it... Carrying around 40+ lbs. of weight on the back is not natural.

Go as light as possible on your normal gear. If you can get your pack base weight (everything BUT food and water) under 20-15 lbs you are sitting pretty. Thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail is where ultralight hiking was born pretty much. You don't need a ton of gear. Lighten your load and your back/knees will thank you. I have seen ultralight thru-hikers with a total pack weight of 30lbs INCLUDING food and water.
Check this thread for starters: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/9664724 And also, if you are seriously planning thru-hiking on the AT.. here is your new bible: http://www.whiteblaze.net
Food, you don't need to carry that much on the AT. 2-3 days of food should be plenty. You can resupply every few days. Water is heavy, you also don't have to carry a TON of it... just enough to hike and hydrate you.. I never fully thu-hiked but I always just carried my water bottle full and my platypus 2L bladder full. If I knew I wasn't going to run into fresh water for a while I had an extra 2L bladder. When I'd run low I just re-fill, there's always water somewhere nearby on the AT.

I've done sections of it.... I always wanted to thru-hike but plans fell through I didn't have the time/resources.
Someday...until then I can just live vicariously through you

I like back packing there because You dont have to bring any water just a cup...Ill usually filter it through a shirt and not impurify the water with iodine...Its not really necessary for that area anyways but as far as outside and before you get into the national park..That might be a different story...
Not a good idea. The bacteria that cause Giardia are from animal feces in the river, probably the more remote you go into the woods the more animals there are going to be.
Have you ever been to the smokey's? The quality of water up there is unmatched in the country maybe minus colorado...The waters are constantly moving and dont really get higher than 45 degrees and that's in the heat of summer time...
How do you think the Cherokee survived there for thousands of years...The waters are 99.9% safe I would say...

I plan to thru hike the AT this summer. I need to do more research, but plan to begin in Maine in May or early June.
