Anyone have any good ideas? My friend wants to build something that doesn't require wire mesh.. he wants to be able to use things he has around the house. He will buy the damp rid of course.. but needs to know a way to effectivly seperate the shrooms from the damprid and the water that will collect on the bottom of the bowl. Thanks.

Build what I built
Put some wire mesh in a rubbermaid, and throw some silica gel in the bottom (kitty litter addition stuff, real cheap) Here, I'll get a picture:

Here are some pictures I found on the internet. They were NOT taken in my house.
Super cheap to make, just go to Wal-Mart and find a mesh, then match it up with a rubbermaid!

Some people have wire BBQ grills and rubbermaids around their houses I spose...
Otherwise you just need something they won't stick to...

Some pizaa places deliver their pizzas on some plastic mat with holes in it yo ucan use that. Also you can use the tables they put on the pizza that hold the top up to hold the plastic about the dessicant.

Using a fan to dry them is best. It takes 90 to 95% of the water away in 24 hours or less. Then they can be further dry in a dry box and water build up isn't even an issue.

Yep fan is the best IMHO. When the shrooms are fresh, I have found damp rid to take a long time to dry them completely. A fan will get them 90% dry in 24 hours and another day and they are cracker dry.

Thanks for the info everyone. My friend was planning on using a fan but he still wanted to go the extra mile and use a dry chamber afterwards.. how much damp rid do you put in the bottom of a tupperware bowl? Does it really matter? As long as the mushies don't touch the stuff it should be cool, right? Thanks for all the replies...

Damp rid at the bottom of a container. Then take a sheet of foil, put it on something soft and poke the shit out of it with a fork. Costs a penny and takes no time...
If they are already dry from the fan, you could just put them in an open plastic baggie and put that in the container on the damp rid.

Thanks for the information. I guess once you dry with a fan.. it's pretty much dry to the point where it doesnt matter what you sit it on, as long as it is around the damprid and not on the damprid.. thanks everyone.

I alway use the fan, as people suggested for about 48 hours.
then I just throw some Damp-Rid on the botton of a deep tuppaware container. Put my shrooms on a piece of paper towel, and suspend the paper towel over the damp rid by pulling it up on the sides and putting the lid of the container on.
Works great for me.
Peace

Fans work fine. You don't even need calcium chloride (damprid)
It takes more effort to build a drying box It takes more time to dry than a fan You have to bake the damp rid to get it dry

I was under the impression that you fan dry.. but you must use damprid to finish the job.. or else it won't be cracker dry... is this true? or can you just fan dry it all the way then store it?
