Nutrient loss from pasteurizing in a pillowcase?
    #13971747 - 02/16/11 12:52 AM (13 years, 17 days ago)

Is there possibly any significant loss of nutrients from pasteurizing Manure & straw in a pillowcase? I know the water in the pot turns dark brown & such, i heard that could be the nitrogen from the manure getting into the water. And if this pasteurization technique is used would it be best to add gypsum to the mix before it goes into the water or after the pasteurization is complete? Thanks for any help

i hydrate to field capacity PRIOR to reaching pasteurization temps.

no water is gained or lost while heating.

well minimal ;p

I guess I'm confused. I want to pasteurize manure & straw inside a pillowcase put into a stock pot full of hot water. Whether or not i hydrate to field capacity before or after putting the pillowcase into the pot of water shouldnt really matter should it? As it will get completely soaked being in a cotton pillowcase inside a big pot of water for a few hours. I hadn't considered that though thank you. I'd like to know if nutrients may get lost during pasterization because of the pillowcase letting them out of the manure & into the hot water bath. Whereas a plastic bag or the likes would contain the manure/straw & all of the water added to it prior to pasteurization.

That method is a little out of date. You should search counter-top roaster and do as koolaid said, hydate to feild temp, load in spawn bags, and bring internal temp to 130-170F inside the hot bath of the roaster.
