Do I have too few cakes to continue to casing?
    #13968959 - 02/15/11 05:20 PM (13 years, 18 days ago)

Hey everybody, just a few quick questions. This is my first attempt at growing some delicious mushrooms so go easy on me if the questions are a little dumb.

For this project I made 5 BRF cakes in half pint jars with vermiculite (I would have made ten but I got a little excited with the plunger on the spore needle and injected too much into the first jar).

I wanted to break up and case the cakes once they were ready and now I'm not sure if I would have enough for casing to work. Should I just dunk the cakes and pick off them and be happy with what I get or should I try and case them anyway? I guess I would have to wait longer for the mycelium to continue colonizing which I guess would mean more chance of infection, but I'll wait to here what you pros have to say!

Also a quick question on casing tek? Which one would be best for me? I'll be honest, I'm looking for the simplest cheapest one (I've already blown a lot of my budget on my initial setup and I only have another 30 bucks set aside for this, though maybe I could get some more funding from friends) Not to mention my roomate isnt to keen on this whole plan so I have to keep this as low impact as possible (No microwaving horse poo or anything like that, hes in the military and while he doesnt mind too much it can start arguments if crazy smells start coming form around the house lol.)

So any help here will be appreciated guys thank!

p.s. sorry if this reads wierd, I'm trying to type it all out before my internet connection fails again, so no spell check. Sorry for hurting your eyes ahead of time!

Cakes are best fruited as cakes, not cased.
There's an argument to be made for spawning cakes, but not on your first grow.

For great results, fruits cakes as cakes in a shotgun FC.

I will have to agree with Doc_T. Dunk and roll in verm and fruit them like that.

Guess I have some more to learn. I thought to case all you had to do was crumble your cakes on top of some vermiculite and then layer coir over them.

Cool I'll dunk and roll then, and is the shot gun fruiting chamber the one with all the holes in it?

That's old school, we've learned since BItD.

Shotgun FC with all the holes, 1/4" hole every two inches all the way around all six sides.

Back In the Day.

The tek you describe with the coir and verm would work, but for the time and materials involved, there are better methods.
And likewise in regards to increased time and risk compared to the possibility of increased yield.

Spawning to bulk is great, don't get me wrong. But use grain for that. Cakes kick ass if done right.

Lol i only have 5 cakes because on first cake i got excited and over inoculated. One also died of contams. You could spawn to coir but no point to risk it unless you have more cakes to play with. Ive seen growlogs of people getting substantial amounts of fruits from cakes in sgfc's. Its def the way for us begginers to go.

lol, thats terrible! BUt its good to know I'm not the only one who fucked that part up. Oh well:tongue2: so long as the some of my cake grow big and strong and shroomie.

I'll definitely go for the shotgun FC. Thanks for all of the help so far guys!
