Yeah, but it could be a misnomer for tentworms/bagworms/gypsy moth larva.

I'm confused. I asked if they were silkworm webs because usually that's what they are when I see a huge web in a tree like that around here
Whatever name you want to call them.

Dude, when I was little my grandfather taught me to shoot a shotgun by blasting tentworms out of trees.
His other solution was soaking a rag in hydraulic oil, tying it on a stick, lighting in on fire, and burning the nests out of our trees.

Ohhh okay. I have never heard of them referred to as tent worms before. I didn't realize they were two different things. Tent worms are the things that I was thinking of, but I've always called them silk worms
That silk worm cocoon reminds me of this time I found a similar-looking cocoon on a blade of grass. I was really into butterflies at the time, and I thought "Oh, cool! I'll go home and hatch this!"
..yeah. It turned out to be full of spiders. I opened my container one day and to my horror, a bunch of baby spiders started crawling out

silkworms cocoons are what the textile silk is processed from. Silkworms are indigenous to china where they soley consume mulberry leaves. Silk is one of the oldest textiles and as well as being considered a fine garment material also has valubale use as the innermost layer of combat armour. This is because when a metal blade/projectile pierces the abdomen, organ material will stick to it and be pulled out when the metal is removed. Silk prevents this adhesion from occuring.
