I almost joined the marines a few years after high-school. I took the practice ASVAB and scored very high, but I decided against joining last minute! My two friends who joined the marines a few years earlier told me it was a bad idea. They both said it wasn't worth it, simply because of the psychological pain caused by the negative things you witness in a real-life battle zone.
So I got my ass back to college

should've done navy. scoring a high asvab score and being a college student, you'd be set. they'd probably even wipe your ass for you after your shit.

I wont deny that people can do some fucked up shit, leave that shit for your 'enemy'. it's up to the individual to make sure he and his unit are above that. I've seen my share of crap in combat but it's really not any different than shit I've witnessed in civilian life. there's nothing that can prepare you for combat and nothing can prepare you for returning home but one thing it will do is put you in touch with your own humanity.
even today certain sounds put me on alert, steel against concrete is a trigger, it brings back memories and it's rare that they're bad but then that may be because of how I choose to view the experience
