Covering Jars?
    #13969945 - 02/15/11 08:03 PM (13 years, 18 days ago)

Question, when I first innoulated my jars I had just read that it doesnt matter weather you covered them or not, some one was even saying that in fact it could slow down your growth due to a lack of oxygen exchange. It was implied that the top layer of vermiculite in my brf jars would be enough to hold off contaminants.

But as I read through the forums I hear a lot of talk about covering the inoculation points on the jars.

Mine are 5 days inoculated, should I go ahead and try to cover them? Does it matter?

I leave mine uncovered. You can cover them, but not for too long. Once the mycelium really starts growing they are going to need gas exchange or they will stall out.

ETA:
Be sure to keep the verm dry (don't tip jars over) or they can get contaminated.

What would you cover them with? Generally not a good idea with classic BRF jars.

I've seen some people recommend covering inoculation holes with tape before PC and then lifting tape to inoculate then replacing tape. No reason to if you ask me.

Too late now.

But the PF tech is best when you follow the directions like you did.

The advice of overly paranoid and over-protective amateur mycologists is not always the best advice, and is sometime just a delusional fantasy.

Don't cover trust me. your jars will stall after a couple weeks at 80% you'll most likely stop growth cause of gas exchange. You can tip over for one day if you left em covered but not for long cause other the myc will get confused on which way is up to grow them
this is what will happen if you keep em covered
stalled at 90% pic of 35 days after noc'd up

this is what will happen if you leave them turned over

that top jar is probably not stalled, that looks like bacterial contaminant

but to the original poster I keep my holes open

I run 5-6 at a time 2 SGFC at once i like good yeilds i use to do monotubs but i like PF tek just because of the success rate. I'd rather have smaller yields and more success than wait a month and for one small reason have it be alla waste

Nah, I think my question got answered pretty quickly lol. Dont cover and dont let the vermiculite get wet or contaminated.

As an added protection, the holes can be covered with medical micropore tape, which is breathable.  You put the medical tape on before sterilization, and it keeps the top layer of verm sterile until you punch the needle through.  Simply inject right through the micropore tape, and leave the hole open afterwards.

You probably already know this, but you must also remove the foil.  Leaving the foil in place during colonization will lead to a higher rate of contamination, as well as stalling from lack of gas exchange.

Interesting, where can I get micropore tape though? It sounds like a specialty item. And yeah I went ahead and removed the foil, It just looked terrible sitting there with little flecks of water still clinging to it, It just looked like shroom death waiting to happen.
