Hmm tough question. I guess mostly for home defense/fighting off zombies but the more I think about it, it would be fun to shoot some clay birds. I'm thinking about $300 used. Also after further reading I see even a small .410 out powers a .357 magnum, and I've shot one of those. It was a loud gun for sure.
I searched around and found a tactical .410 with adjustible choke. Wide pattern for home defense but still good for recreational shooting/rabbits etc... What do you think about adjustable/switchable chokes?

Choke tubes are a necessity. Im a duck hunter by recreation, and I can tell you chokes are very important. The allow you to adjust the overall spread of your shot vs. the distance it travels, which is crutial if you plan on shooting clays. Honestly tho, id go with a 12 Ga. espically if your using it for home defense/trap shooting.

Well I think Ive decided on a remington 870 express.
http://remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model-870/model-870-express.aspx
Seems like a nice basic/beginner shotgun and everybody Ive talked to that has owned one is happy with it. Any troubles it may have, remington is happy to fix. Another question though. It says on this page it has "Modified Rem Choke". Does this mean the choke is fixed? Do you know anything about modified choke concerning trap shooting vs. waterfowling? I would like to try both some day...

I know a guy that keeps a pistol grip .410 with a very short barrel for home defense...
I have a mossberg 12 gauge with a skeet barrel and a rifled slug barrel. I usually keep the slug barrel on it.

Ive owned a Rem 870 Express Youth Model since i was about 12 yrs old. It was my first shotgun and still one of the most reliable that i own.
The "modified Rem choke" is simply a remington editon Modified Choke Tube and can be removed quite easily with the specific tool that should come with the weapon. Its a fantastic first shotgun and is capable of both trap shooting and waterfowling.
However i still hold to my opinon that nothing beats a 12 Ga. for either of those purposes. But for being a first gun, the 870 should do you just fine.

Also, if you do a google search for Shotgun choke tubes, and do a bit of reading, itll give you a much more simple understanding of chokes and their applications.

I would sort of like a 10 gauge.

Are (or were) you planning on moving on to hunting? Or sticking with the target practice? I come from a family of hunters within a deer hunting group of 10 and we're packing a small shotgun arsenal (unfortunately is shotgun only zoning in our area). When myself and my cousin came of age, there was the natural discussion of what our first shotgun would be. When it rolled around to .410's everyone had the same reaction, "Why not bump up to a 20 gauge?" The difference in kick is negligible, you naturally get more range, but most importantly it provides the stopping power needed for big game. So I used a 20 gauge youth size pump action for three years (3" Mags only), and then moved up to a Remington 16 semi automatic. If I could do it all over again, I would have gotten the 16 off the bat, beautiful piece with a long barrel. BTW those double barrel .410 pistols are mostly for show. If your talking home defense, its better to have a full clip of 9mm then two shots at protecting yourself (what if you miss?). And they are way too inaccurate for hunting or shooting clay pigeons. Good luck on your buy. Omega SPS-12 is a beauty if your willing to accept the kick (but you get used to it in a hurry).
