How much gypsum i need?

I have decided to take this hobby a little bit further but first i need some help.
How much should i add gypsum to bulk substrate and how do i do it?
I have made 25 PF cakes and im going to make bulk substrate for those cakes from coco coir, vermiculite and coffee. The cakes are 1,8dl in size and im going to make 9 liters of bulk. Theres a vermiculite layer on the cake that i didnt count to that 1,8dl.
Is the gypsum added to bulk substrate BEFORE i pastorise it or AFTER pastorising, and HOW MUCH should i add it?
I didnt add gypsum to cakes yet because i just got that idea today, but is it good to add it to both cakes and bulk, or is it used on bulk or cakes only?
Hopefully someone understands me =)

You want 5% of the volume of the substrate you chose. In this case...however much sub your using. Add 5% to the whole mix then get the whole mix to the proper moisture level and pasteurize. Your good without adding more gypsum to the cakes if your just using them for spawn, but if you aren't using them for spawn, then add gypsum. We don't add gypsum to the grain jars before spawning (other then the soak part for some but don't worry about that).
Voila, your done.

One tablespoon of gypusm per 6 pf cakes. I always add gypsum to my grain jars whether im spawning or not. Just a knifetip. Some ppl use upto 10% gypsum in there bulk but for me I find it can turn your project into a brick

So i add 0,45L of gypsum to 9L of bulk mixture and pasteurize that. Then i add crumbled cakes and its ready to use. Thank you very much!

You're supposed to use gypsum, not plaster of paris. Gypsum will never turn a substrate into a brick, even if you use it at 50%.
3% to 5% by volume or 2% by weight is plenty. This is less than I used to recommend, but find it works as well. Below those amounts, performance drops off. RR

They did something else wrong then, such as using bagged cow manure without cutting it with vermiculite. Gypsum doesn't turn into a brick. It's stated use is to break up clay soils, and it's very good at it. I have clay soil up here and use large amounts of gypsum in my fruit tree orchard. RR

From my research SET Plaster is indeed gypsum. And it will not turn your substrate into brick. However if you buy a bucket of plaster (powder, need to mix with water) this is not gypsum. Plaster goes through a chemical reaction during the setting process which turns it into gypsum. Plaster is made FROM gypsum, through heating, and returns to that chemical state after setting.
With that said, Plaster is made from heating gypsum above autoclave temps, but under 350F.
So I believe its ok to autoclave, but I wouldn't bake it in my oven like some do with vermiculite.

DAP brand plaster of paris ( 4lb bucket ) , web site says 75 - 85% calcium sulfate , 15 - 25% calcium carbonate and some silca. Sounded like the perfect mix to me. Also availabe in big bags.

Yes, gypsum in pellet or granular form is what you want. Don't use plaster of paris. RR
