Reishi on Home Depot sawdust

I got some free sawdust from home depot to use for my substrate. I spawned 2 bags with rye on sawdust/chips and it is almost fully colonized. My friend mentioned that some of the woods that they cut at home depot might be pressed with some poisonous chemical. What do you think the chances are that this is true? And if it is true, will the fruits absorb this poison?

ask if any wood preservatives were on the sawdust and if it was then yes the mushrooms will absorb the chemicals, they are very good accumulators.

THis seems like a very pertinent and interesting question.
Wood is indeed treated to prevent weathering and rot, however; the particulars of any given batch may be difficult to determine. I would be careful about relying too much on Home Depot information, as they likely have no mechanism set up to know what their particular stock was treated with- though perhaps I'd be surprised.
The main toxin I've heard of is arsenic. Recently in the US it has been opposed and the use somewhat restricted, however; it is still used and would seem to be a problem.

I would think Home Depot is mostly cutting plywood and pine neither of which seems ideal. The plywood definitely will have some nasty stuff from the glue and whatnot.

Pressure treated green wood is bad, I wouldn't even roast a marshmallow on that never mind grow a mushroom on it.
Old wood pallets are out too.
Poison.

Find a cabinetry shop that makes fine furniture, you'll see huge things outside that look like grain silos with hoses going to them behind the shop.
They are filled with hardwood sawdust.
It's what you want.

Plywood is fine to use and there's no toxins in the glue which would effect the mushrooms. In fact, I've used strips of plywood for reishi in the past and it eats the glue first, and then moves to the wood.
Pressure treated wood has copper arsenate in it and should be avoided completely. In fact, I won't even use pressure treated fence posts around my garden area.
Furniture building sawdust is really too fine and powdery to be much use unless you have something to cut it with such as course sawdust or shredded cardboard, etc. RR

The red wood appears to be cedar ? Didn't think cedar was usable for most mushrooms, or can the aromatics be removed ?

A shop with a lathe won't just produce dust, check it out first before you dismiss it.

Ok i went down to home depot and asked about their pressure treated wood. The guy said that they don't use arsenic anymore. He said that it is all oil based now. Sound okay?

Here is a link to Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), the Consumer Safety Information Sheet (CSIS) for CCA treated lumber and other helpful items. Read page 3 and 4.

Those are about the ones with copper arsenate, which isn't used anymore. Just checked the home depot website.. should have started there
"To withstand the elements, wood is chemically protected through a process called pressure treating, which wards off insects, microorganisms and fungal decay. The most common types of chemical used to treat wood are Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ), Copper Azole (CA), and, the newest type, Micronized Copper Quaternary (MCQ). Pressure treated lumber can last 20 years or more, and most pressure treated wood comes with a limited lifetime warranty. "

I suppose I'm going to continue to fruit them but not plan on consuming them. I'll use it as practice for next time, i know that reishi can be quirky.
