I think the real question should be how much money do you have to splash out on a scope?
They can get pricey but a good, useful scope can be picked up for less than a few hundred dollars.
I use an Amscope and it does the jobs I ask of it.
A link by Alan that could be useful>>>>link

This is the least expensive microscope that has true kohler illumination.

There are a few more similar modles if you search on ebay for kohler microscope.

You probably want something with Kohler illumination then. It is pronounced curler.
I think the best microscopes are Meiji but some people like Zeiss and others like Olympus or Nikon.
I will use anything that has an oil immersion lens and get good results no matter how crappy it is. Some of those Amscopes don't have a very bright light though.

I did once. Tinfoil is easier to mail and store.

I do it all the time, especially with smaller mushrooms. I usually just add a drop of water and a cover slip.

Greetings All,
This website was extremely helpful when I was researching scopes for mycology, and I still reference it from time to time. Mushroom Expert

I also ordered my scope and usb camera attachment from Amscope and received it just a few days ago. (The "Squint" in me couldnt have been happier lol) Their prices are really the best that I have found

Good Luck in your search

What is the best option for illumination? Someone was saying that halogen will burn when looking at live mycelium? Will a tungsten bulb do the same? Great thread thanks everyone.

I suppose that a trinocular form would be useful for attaching a camera.
Is this recommended?
This one looks useful: http://store.amscope.com/t490b-3mt.html
Take care,

I am thinking about getting one.
Thank you,

That is a great microscope, and not a bad price for a new scope with kohler illumination.
Seller looks solid too, I'd buy it. The true Kohler illumination will give you better resolution than the Amscopes and others without it, if you adjust it properly every time you switch objectives.
