PF-TEK cakes: aborts and slow pins.
    #1394747 - 03/20/03 07:23 AM (21 years, 14 days ago)

Well, the good news is that the cakes this character is a book I'm writing finally had her cakes begin fruiting. The joy in this is almost inexpressible - the patience paid off and it's been a fascinating process. Thanks to all who pointed out that they needed more light - because they started pinning in earnest once we gave them enough.

However, it's obviously not as efficient as it could be. One cake seems to be aborting left and right - the heads on over half of the fruits are turning black and/or getting dry-looking spots on them before they can get much past beyond the 'pin with a little color' stage. And one cake is just sitting there turning blue, no pins either. We do have a monster cake that's been on par with anythign I've seen posted for a PFTEK cake, so we're not completely stupid.

The fakts:
All of them are standard BRF/Verm cakes that were cold shocked and dunked for 12 hours immediately after birthing. They've been kept at 70-74 deg F, fanned 2-4 times/day and humidity is very high - we only have one of those cheap hydrometers, but it's perlite and water, with a small heater/jar setup to keep it up.

So - can a cake that keeps aborting be helped to produce healthier fruits?
If a cake doesn't pin, but just starts to turn blue (yes, it was dunked 2 weeks ago) is there anything to be done for it?

I think Kramer's right, but since they're already pinning, I think it's too late to case. I think I'll try injecting a few with distilled water, putting wet verm on the ones which aren't pinning on top, and most definitely dunking them again after this flush.

and how would you go about putting the wet verm on top (what kinds of measurements, etc...) and did you get those spores from the keeper?

This guy put a little water on the non-pinning areas of the cakes - the blueing went away and now those areas are pinning.
I think he let the cakes sit too long without light, so they wouldn't continue pinning, but they lost water in the meantime. So the extra water helped them get back on the road, and he's seeing lots of pins now.

Just like a little layer of damp verm on top may help - like 1/4-1/2 inch
