    #1395056 - 03/20/03 11:41 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

None of the teks were very clear on this, so can someone quickly tell me, do you guys give freshly innoculated jars light or not after you inject the spores and are waiting for the myc to 'grow'?

The ant's in my ant farm don't give their jars a direct light, their jars sit in a transparent container, that is snuggled in the corner of the farm. Not the darkest place But they get 100% inoculation everytime. So I'd say it would be alright, just not a direct light.

P.S. get others opinions, My ants arn't pros. So they could be wrong.

You give your mycelium network light (and a few other things) when you want to signal it to fruit.

after innoculation, jars should be incubated and given NO light.

after the jars are completely colonized and birthed, they then can be given light to induce fruiting, as sixcee said.

Another thing, doesnt the coolness of the glass mean the inside contents will be pretty cold too?

Actually glass is one of the worst substances around the house at transferring heat.

EDIT:  Think why glass bowls are so popular  .

No light at all except maybe when they're almost colonized and you want them to form primordia invitro. You definately don't want light if you're planning on casing or spawning the cakes. Light is one of the signals to fruit.

When something feels cool to the touch, it doesn't necessarily mean its cold. If you have a bunch of things sitting in the same room they'll be around the same temperature even though some may feel colder than others. The reason for this is that some things conduct heat away from your hand faster than others. Metal feels cold not only if it is actually cold but because it is a good conductor and the heat is taken from your hand quicker than a blanket would(for example).

If the room is cold, you might want to build an incubator to keep your jars around 80F.

Light for the jars is bad, it will cause premature fruiting. But light is required to some degree when you want fruiting to occur. Also the fruit grows towards the light, so if you want all of them to grow upwards and not curl and bend, a simple light above the teririum will cause this. However the light is not like the light required for plant growth. Light doesn't cause growth at all, but rather is a guide for the lifeform to point to. So a small amount if light is plenty, as well as indirect natural sunlight.

Using standard Rubbermaid containers of the clear type with a colored lids will cause fruit to bend and twist into some interesting shapes, but simply adding a plexiglass adapted lid allows the majority of light to enter from the top, causeing all of the fruit to grow upwards, right-side up. All all the light required comes from a window in the room with the blinds adjusted to send the light up.

So light has an effect in the process, but it is a minor effect.
