K2 1

Anybody here crazy enough to even consider climbing it? Everyone talks about Everest but I'm pretty sure K2 trumps Everest (and pretty easily I might add) when it comes to what is actually considered the holy grail of mountaineering/mountain climbing.
It's the second deadliest mountain by percentage in the world (for every 4 who summit 1 dies), and I heard only like 300 some people have actually reached the summit, as opposed to almost 4,000 for Everest.
K2 is the earth's second tallest mountain at 28,251 feet.
Here are some facts:
-- On August 1, 2008, a number of climbers went missing when a serac in the Bottleneck snapped and broke their ropes.Survivors were seen from a helicopter but rescue efforts were impeded by the high altitude. Eleven were never found, and presumed dead.
-- 13 climbers from several expeditions died in 1986 in the 1986 K2 Disaster, five of these in a severe storm
-- A team from the Mountaineering Association of Japan led by Isao Shinkai and Masatsugo Konishi put three members, Naoe Sakashita, Hiroshi Yoshino, and Yukihiro Yanagisawa, on the summit on August 14. However Yanagisawa fell and died on the descent.
-- no climbers summitted the peak in 2002 and 2003.
-- there is only one-third as much oxygen available to a climber on the summit of K2 as there is at sea level
-- the propensity of the mountain to experience extreme storms of several days' duration, which have resulted in many of the deaths on the peak.
-- Despite many attempts there have been no successful winter ascents.
-- On 6 August 2010, Fredrik Ericsson, who intended to ski from the summit, joined Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner on the way to the summit of K2. Ericsson fell 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) and was killed. Kaltenbrunner aborted her summit attempt.

I say we go for it. We'll get the shroomery together, drop some acid and try to wing it on K2 and see how many of us live.

I would try it.
I'd rather try a less deadly mountain first though. Something like Kilimanjaro.
Fuck those wait lists and shit though.

If I had the nuts (and the experience) I might consider it.
Can you imagine making it to the summit of a mountain that only some 300 plus people have accomplished in the history of the world?!?!
It would be amazing. But you'd almost certainly have to trek Everest as a prerequisite to K2 first.

That is some straight BALLSY shit to do w/out a harness. Mad props to him, though.
That reminds me of that show on History Channel -- "Most Dangerous Roads". Or some shit like that.
Those fuckers are rolling on roads (with no side barriers)on streets like 10,000 feet up with cliffs on the other side.
One slip up and goodnight.

Yep, IRT. And those idiots who live there haul ass on those roads blowing their horns and shit and constantly pass the cars in front of them WITHOUT even knowing what's coming around the next bend.
Fucking crazy bastards.
What's her name -- Lisa I think (the pretty nice looking chick from IRT) was so freaked out she pulled over and just sat there. She couldn't drive anymore. Looked like she was about to hurl.

i saw that, that was the ok part. Later on she got in a traffic jam and a mob of guys opened her door, and trying to get her. It took the other 2 drivers to get out and run over there and start threatening.

Seems like every single week at some point Discovery re-airs one of their old Everest shows.
I know Everest is more popular but I'd rather watch something on K2 every day of the week.
Now obviously K2 doesn't have near as many climbing attempts as Everest, but there's still at least some attempts every single year, no? Strap em' up with a camera and lets roll. Or send up a suicidal camera man with them

It really takes a lifetime of training to get ready for a climb like K2. I climb at least one mountain in Washington state each week, usually the 3K to 4K vertical climb variety, just to stay in shape. As soon as the snow melts, I'll start making two trips up and back down the mountain.
My son and I are climbing Mt Ranier this summer, so I'm working all winter to make sure I make it. At this point, I can't imagine going up to 28,000 feet. I'm getting close to passing out in my plane at 14,000 feet without supplemental oxygen, and that's just sitting there. Trying to double that on foot seems like suicide. RR

I can't even imagine it. I'd like to try some intermediate mountains in my lifetime at some point.
But yeah, K2 is ridiculous. Amazing, but the risk factor is out of this world.
Good luck on Rainer, Roger.

Apparently this mountain (Annapurna) is the official deadliest mountain on Earth. Close to a 45% death rate. Mind boggling.

I would try it if i was experienced.
I climbed 3 mountains when i was in South America, All of which were around 20,000'.
Seeing the sun rise, while you look down on the top of the clouds, from the summit of a 20,000' mountain is an amazing feeling.
I am hoping to start getting into mountaineering over the next couple years. I am considering taking a skills course in the next year...
It's amazing. I think the struggle and the satisfaction of success would ultimately trump the possibility of death. Dying on a mountain would be one of my preferred ways to go, anyways...
Here's a couple pics from Bolivia:
