Narrow it down and there are legitimate concerns to be sure. And, the "one bad apple" might hold some water . . . if new apples would just quit lining up to do the same. Also, many of these self-proclaimed reps are making their little thing out to be a more formal movement than it is at this point.

New idiots pop up, open their mouths and betray their unreal lack of understanding or history, geography, and the the constitution which they keep screaming about. It continues to amaze me that I have heard very little blowback from members of either the Republican party, right-leaning pundits, the tea "party" itself, when these people come out with such blatantly and demonstrably false statements. It is definitely way past the one bad apple theory now. I guess in a nation where so many know so little, "facts" are just an anachronism at best, or possibly an outright anathema.

without the burden of all that government, people should have more excess wealth which they would hopefully donate out of the goodness of their hearts.

Yeah, I found that bit pretty funny too.

It'd work great for the genuinely good people.

But not so great for most people.

This is because libertarianism is quite a fundamentalist idea, any instance of government programs/regulation of business doing good must be glossed over, as must any example of the free market not leading to greater prosperity be ignored. Government is always the problem, business is always the solution. At its worst, libertarianism almost melds with anarchism with a strong dose of social Darwinism, however, there are many intelligent and perhaps more importantly sincere libertarians who really do want to make a better society and have many good points about the dangers of big government. Most recently, the failure of the patriot act extension to pass is something which had a lot to do with the tea party, and the republicans that voted against it deserve a lot of credit.

Please note that, my comments you quoted were from a side-track in the thread and were specific to the tea "party".

I tend to lean left/libertarian on those political position tests, and in fact I generally like much of pure Libertarianism. However as I mentioned early in the thread, every Libertarian I know personally is just using it to hide behind, while the spout right-media talking points like there is no tomorrow.

ETA: I presume this is in part due to the "blue" nature of Portland. Not cool to be a righty here, unless of course you live in LakeO or up on the West Hills, heh.

Or using it to protect their drug use without considering the other ramifications of the philosophy.
