Right? Somehow it really felt like they were just screwing around on the job through the whole movie.

You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but all I said was that he managed to please the elite and the crowd in a general way. Avatar for example pleased the crowd, while the only appeal to specialists was Cameron's logistic organization and technique.

It's a very literary definition, you will probably have a better appreciation of literature. The specific characteristic of cinema is film editing, as it cannot be seen elsewhere.

I thought the movie was crap too.  None of the characters seemed invested in what they were doing.  It seemed like their mission was unimportant to them.

perhaps it was. see how policemen or firefighers work? they have important jobs but its all the same to them after you do it for a while.

I guess you're right there, I've never been much of a film buff, and unique editing can't keep me interested in a movie without characters and storylines I find compelling.

IMO the best movie I've seen in recent memory was Black Swan, and not just for the lezzy scenes...

If a policemen is in a fire fight or a fire fighter is fighting a fire their attitude changes drastically.  That's why cops kill people and beat the shit out of people for no reason and that's why the guy who's too afraid to talk to that girl at the bar will dramatically run into a burning building to save your gold fish who was not in any danger in the first place because it's in a freaking bowl of water.

But I digress, the characters don't seem to be very interested in the guns firing at them or...well it's been a while since I've seen the movie, but I remember constantly noticing the characters disinterest in the plot.

I thought it sucked personally.
Good concept to begin with, but terribly executed. Plot was full of holes and paradoxes.
I left the film with a bad taste in my mouth, typical hollywood movie 'trying' to be deep to appeal to the masses.
IMO it failed miserably. Like woah man, we're gonna into a dream within a dream within a dream within a dream
Best recent movie I've seen was Enter the Void.. now that's a mindfuck done right.

my point is however interesting a job might seem it gets to be a routine in the end and you just do it. why should they be all giddy and eager like a bunch of fags?

I thought the idea of spending a lifetime in purgatory was fucked up...in a good way.

It was really creepy for me because I spent (literally) ages in the abyss during my second mushroom trip. I have nightmares about it, but I'm still glad it happened.

Generally people get exited when actions/decisions could result in death, or in this case purgatory.

A cop who is writing possession and domestic violence reports all day will turn into an astute attentive person if shot at.  A firefighter may sit on call for 2 days, but as soon as that alarm sounds he's ready to go fight a fire and maybe for his life.

There was a lot of shooting in the snow dream and no one seemed to care.  With the elevator scene the dude wasn't freaking out much at the possibility of all his friends being stuck in purgatory. The conversation that was held in the bar wasn't very convincing at all.

It just surprises me that they are so calm, if you look at footage of 9/11 the cops are doing their jobs, but their obviously scared shitless and unsure of how things are going to work out.

In the movie, they knowingly enter layer after layer of bad situations without any noticeable stressful body language, which any normal human being (highly trained seal or kindergarten teacher) would show.

It's just a "clean" movie made of polished heroes. In a James Bond way.

I thought Batman Begins was fantastic, so I don't have any problems with the director. I just don't think this is his best moment.

I'm sure it's technically a very well-made movie, and congratulations to Nolan for being so successful, but to me, plot and dialogue, scriptwriting, is  the heart and soul of any movie. No matter how much you polish a turd, it'll always be a turd.
