Obama wants longer extension of Patriot Act than House Republicans

The Obama administration said Tuesday it wants a three-year extension of Patriot Act surveillance authorities, far longer than the timeline proposed by House Republicans.
The White House released a Statement of Administration Policy that says it "would strongly prefer enactment of reauthorizing legislation that would extend these authorities until December 2013."
House Republicans are considering an extension until December of this year.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Tuesday that this issue is a "must" for the Senate to address before it leaves for its February 21-25 Presidents' Day break. "We have got to take care of that before we leave.”
The House and Senate are moving quickly because the surveillance authorities at issue expire on February 28.

Doesn't that say that link say that more people agreed to extend it?

I wonder how the Otards justify their savior's unholy request. Any of our resident "Yes We Can" children want to chime in and show us the "Change"? And while we are on the topic of our Dear Failure, whatever happened to closing Guantanamo? I find it sad that people still have faith in the empty suit in office.

the silence is deafening!
The fascinating part to me was how the republican leaders tried to sneak this bill in late at night and the Tea Party fucked them!
Tea Party
Now Mr. Change we can believe in Obama has to figure out a way to get this passed soon!

Hold on there, cowboy:

In 2010, of the Democrats who voted, 62.5% voted "Aye." But in 2011, only 35.4% voted in favor of renewal. [...for Republicans, those numbers are 93.9% and 88.6%, respectively.]
Boy do they get pissy when they have a bad election year.
I think a 27% drop in Dem "ayes" is a good bit more of a factor than a 5% drop in Republican "ayes".

This is legislation that puts our own Justice Department above the law…When National Security Letters are issued, they allow federal agents to conduct any search on any American, no matter how extensive or wide-ranging, without ever going before a judge to prove that the search is necessary. They simply need sign-off from a local FBI official. That’s all."
…And if someone wants to know why their own government has decided to go on a fishing expedition through every personal record or private document – through library books they’ve read and phone calls they’ve made – this legislation gives people no rights to appeal the need for such a search in a court of law.
No judge will hear their plea, no jury will hear their case. This is just plain wrong.
Wow! I wholeheartedly agree with this position! Hmmm, who was it that said these things?
Oh, right, it was Barack Obama (2005 speech ) the same guy who gave retroactive immunity to corporate spies who were illegally snooping on Americans' telephone conversations and secretly passing the information on to third parties. (another thing he said he wouldn't do, but did).
How can anyone trust this guy? I can deal with a politician who takes positions I oppose, I can't deal with straight-up bullshit on core policy issues- especially those that talk down to me and treat me like an idiot that votes on emotion, "tone of debate", or other wishy washy crap while being so uninformed that I'd forget this crap.
He has constantly betrayed every good thing I could say for him, and pretty much every good thing anyone could say for him. How anyone could take any platform from him seriously is beyond me. The man has shown himself to have no principles save for ad-hoc positions that have no rhyme nor reason.
btw... the inevitable Administration and Obama apologist defense of blaming other people (including Bush, of course) who 'forced his hand' seems to be just as silly this time as it has been in the past, according to the information that's came out about the administration's efforts in committee to proactively remove any semblance of restraint on the power- I guess unchecked power is only bad when the 'other guy' sits on the thrown, right Obama?:
Quote:
…Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin) had worked to place language in the bill strengthening civil liberties protections, but in the judiciary committee the Obama administration worked with Republicans to craft seven amendments, effectively watering down Feingold’s work.
Feingold said the bill that emerged from the judiciary committee left him "scratching his head."
