my friend has tried 3 very unsuccessful times to grow the verm/BRf/half-pint way. what is he doing wrong?! he's done everything according to the TEK and it fucks up every time. can anyone give him some pointers? or perhaps a better way to grow. he's got EQ and B+ strains.

i think his problem is the jars drying out. cause the mycelium begins to colonize and then it stops... totally. just sits there. smells like mushrooms, and doesn't change color. what's up? how can he keep his substrate from drying out?

thats a real common problem with cakes, halted growth, you could try scraping the uncolonized off and case it

When substrate is too dry usually the problem is that the air is too dry. Are you using an incubator? The purpose of the incubator isn't just to supply heat but also no dry out substrate with dry air.

Are the lids tight or loose?
Did you take the tape off, or leave it on?
It may not be getting enough air exchange.
Oh yeah, and dry heat is bad.

if you do it once and fail, and then do it the same exact way and fail again... and then the same exact way and fail again, can you really be surprised?
the heating pad may be the problem. the direct heat tends to dry out the jars. don't use one... incubate at room temperature and it'll be a little slower, but surer. when you make your substrate, try doing it like this: get a big bowl of vermiculite (use coarser stuff) and saturate it with water. then strain it, so that the excess drains out. then add half as much brown rice flour as you used vermiculite. stir stir stir stir stir. put in jars, add verm seal, etc. i always did it like that and it worked.
it may just be easier for you to try whole grains.

I think it's the lack of air exchange that's stunting the growth, but if you have dry heat and you loosen the lids and/or take the tape off, they'll dry out.

BTW, heat isn't really nessisary. They'll do fine colonizing at 75-80 degrees. Unless you have them somewhere cold, or you're in a hurry I wouldn't bother.
