opium - marcy playground
never done opium, but this song sorta makes me want to, seems to give a good impression of what its like, one of my favorite songs

--------------------
Go through the orange yesterday

I watched intently for a while to both sides, infront of me and behind me.
I was impressed to learn there was another way to look... UP!
More impressive still was the fact that there were beautiful stars in this direction
Most amazing fact of all was the prospect of another direction when I was done with up. DOWN! Which, based on the feel through my toes would be a fine sandy beach!

Give Lateralus (the album) by Tool a go. The lyrics are quite in tune with a psychedelic experience.

anarchist0999, maybe someday, you'll see that vague lyrics and the psychedelic experience can have an excellent synergy.

Remember, music is SUBJECTIVE. A song that means so much to you, means jack shit to someone else. It's funny that you're trying to tell me like it's a laid down fact that I cannot find meaning in Tool's songs.

I will pardon your ignorance once. Go get a dictionary or thesaurus and examine Tool lyrics. You will see, if you can, how intelligent the music is and how amazingly acurate Maynard can describe so many different human experiences.

This excerpt from H:
Venomous voice, tempts me,
Drains me, bleeds me,
Leaves me cracked and empty.
Drags me down like some sweet gravity.

Can easily be interpretted with a little imagination. Maynard is speaking of something tempting, yet when he embraces it it leaves him in despair. This can be taken differnet ways. For me I tend to think he is speaking of addiction and the problems it can cause.

Kurt Cobain, now there's a man who's lyrics had (still have) meaning... Nothing really 'psychedelic' about Nirvana, just very deep and meaningful. Great music to get stoned to... Especially the awesomely sludgy/raw Bleach tracks.

yeah I think a big part of it is personal feelings towards bands. For example I like tool.. I think it is mysterious and dark, a giant underlying tone of something that I cant quiet grasp.

I think most of becks shit is just dumb, any guy can somehow come up with music like his and string together phrases that I cant make sense out of

Nirvana, I hate Nirvana , dont like any of their songs. If I wanted to hear some depressed guy with a stressed out voice singing how life sucks I can go to the apartment next door.

Dont get me wrong, I still give Nirvana props, they were masters in their field and I respect them as musicians, but I just cant stand their songs.

A great example of diversity among musical tastes, its all about what each person looks for in their music they listen to.

Everything said here is just my opinion, I know im prolly gonna get flamed for what I said tho... so yeah im not trying to say one is better then the other , but in my head I know exactly what I like best.

yeah whatever bitch, i explained every thing needed to understand what im saying. i dont have to go into any kind of depth.

i understand people have different opinions in the meanings of things , and i guess im just trying to express mine too hard.
im not trying to tell you what you can find from lyrics.
but i know how "goths" or "freaks" or whatever you like to be called, think. all people dont think alike but ive been around them soo much that i know most of them think very alike. hell, i used to be like that myself.it was just a "phase or something for me". i realised there is so much more that i like, be it clothes, music, hair styles, whatever.for in stance liking an object just because its black. but thats all your opinion too.

im not trying to put words in your mouth, or trying to tell you what you feel, or like.

anyways i was pretty pissed. when i posted in this thread at first, im going through alot os shit right now.

All music is just words thrown together in different combinations. Some of Tool's songs are ok, and some are horrible. I feel like they are trying too hard. Maybe if I had a bit more teenage angst I could connect with them. It's really about connecting with other like-minded listeners of the music anyways. A sense of belonging to a sub-culture. Whether that be raver, goth, stoner, politician, whatever. Listen to whatever you want, but stay open-minded.

Anarchist have you ever listened to the musical composition of Tool. Danny, their drummer, has some of the most intricate and by far most diverse patterns that I have ever heard in music. He is pure raw talent and his drumming alone can leave me tripping harder than before.

Jethro Tull - Aqualung

intelligent rock and roll with greats lyrics about the relation between God and religion. Great guitar, great drums, perfect flue....everything in synthony (sp?) and it is great to listen to it "lost in the woods"

if you?re more into crazy psychedelic, listen to Syd Barret, the recentely released CD (at least here....lol) is great in nature...perfect...

Wookiefoot. Local Minnesota group, first album, domesticated is basically a trip start to finish, it's a parable and is real cool. Never tripped to it, i prefer stuff a bit less structured usually, but yeah, a great "pot trip". Second album has some interesting things to think about too, though it's not nearly as cohesive. Otherwise blind melon is a favorite while tripping, he has a way with words that fits my ideas about life real well.

I'm not trying to flame you at all. But for you to say somethin like that is kinda perposterous dude.

Latelarus especially is steeped with religous meaning. Read up on buddhism and hinduism and then listen to it. YOu'll understand it isn't just words strong together.

When maynard sings, "But i'm still right here giving blood, keeping faith." and "This tedious path i've chosen here, I certainly would've walked away by now...and i still may, i still may."

That means nothing to you? You can't feel his angst and his dissapointment in giving all he has and not getting anything in return?

I guess art really is for artists....

Incubus kicks ass. Make Yourself and Morning View are EXCELLENT albums to trip to, Morning View especially. And yeah man, you can say you don't like tool, but you can't say the lyrics are "words and phrases together the dont go together and dont make sense", because clearly, they are written intelligently and skillfully. Peace.

One ignorant comment after another. Im going to pretend these assumptions, comments, and misinformed accusations relating to Tool and their fans exist only because you haven't put forth the effort to educate yourself anarchist. Anarchist have you ever seen Tool live? They put on one hell of a fucking show. Do not confuse Tool with Linkin Park or Korn or whoever you are because there actually are meanings and things to be interpreted in their music. During their concerts large murals done by Alex Grey are displayed. Look at that man's work and tell me there isn't any meaning behind it. I don't even know where to start with this post and frankly don't want to. Im going to try to refrain from anymore comments after this before I explode from those last few posts.

i understand i that everyone feels different to different music now , and it wasnt wrong of me to post what i did but i should have taken into consideration others views towards music.

realizing this now, i realize that you are now doing the same to me that i did eirlier.

maybe maynard does put his own meaning into his words but those are his words and his meanings, not mine, and they just dont do shit for me, they have hardly a meaning to me.

also i dont beleive in religion like a higher power or anything, not christianity, buhdism, hindu, greek mythology, or any of it.

Immortal Technique - Revolution 1

A very political and socially aware album, backed up with factual information and brutal punchlines. Brutally honest with deep lyrics, with songs like "dance with the devil" , "The Poverty of Philosophy", "Speak your Mind". Even if you have no or little intrest in hip hop, it is diffenently an eye opener. Immortal Technique is a revolutionary from Peru, who has been through a lot and has things to say. Worth a look...

Tool's references to religion are usually made in a condescending manner. Go listen to "Opiate." This has to be one of the more anti-christian songs every.

Opiate: "Choices always were a problem for you.
What you need is someone strong to guide you.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow,
what you need is someone strong to use you...
like me,
like me.
If you want to get your soul to heaven,
trust in me.
Don't judge or question.
You are broken now,
but faith can heal you.
Just do everything I tell you to do.
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow.
Let me lay my holy hand upon you.
My God's will
becomes me.
When he speaks out,
he speaks through me.
He has needs
like I do.
We both want
to rape you.
Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life.
Open my eyes and blind me with your light
and your lies."

He compares himself to the clergy and states quite clearly that the main goal for both is to rape you. Tool is one of the more open minded, free thinking bands. Anarchist, I encourage you to listen to some of Tool's older lyrics, they are a little more "in your face" and a lot less vague. In Eulogy, he tells Christ to "get off your
fucking cross, We need the fuckin space to can nail the next fool martyr."

Tools lyrics go much further with many vague references to psychadelics throughout "Lateralus" and esp. "Third Eye" where he likens this particular trip to one of mescaline. "But the eyes seem so familiar. Like phosphorescent desert buttons." To me it is amazing how he can tie so many thoughts together. Maynard truly is one of my all time favorite singers. Plus he can scream like no other.

--------------------
"It's only wrong if you get caught.
If consequences dictate
my course of action
I should play GOD."

Nirvana, I hate Nirvana , dont like any of their songs. If I wanted to hear some depressed guy with a stressed out voice singing how life sucks I can go to the apartment next door.

Same here. I also don't care much for Phish. Sorry, but it's great if you (anyone) like them.

As for Tool..........Tool is the best band in the world.

The first time I listened to Aenima I was stuffed into a tiny car with like 6 people and I kept telling people to shutup (because I was falling in love with the music of Tool). I listened to the live version of 3rd eye while on mushrooms and it blew my mind. I reccomend it for anyone who doesn't like tool, just give em a chance while tripping........then form an opinion.

Tool is fucking excellent. My favourite band, actually

The music is about so much more than  'a bunch of random lyrics strung together'.
I first discovered my love for Tool while listening to them while stoned. Fucking amazing. Such intricacies... extremely talented musicians.

A lot of their music is written with psychedelics in mind, in fact,  they openly speak about having used them and gaining positive experiences from them. Their drug of choice is DMT (if you dont know what that is, www.erowid.org).

If you want to expend your mind, listen to Tool tripping.

anarchist0999: youve made your point, you dont like Tool.  I actually prefer that people like you are not Tool fans. Out of curiousity, what is your favourite band?

The above writings are fictional. It is being used to collect information to write a book about someone growing mushrooms.

And remember I will always love you,
As I claw your fucking throat away.
It can end no other way.

as for a favorite band, i dont know that i really have one, i have always liked marilyn manson. ive found a new electronica artist i like called sound factory.

Anarchist has a point. You can like a group without buying into the meaning of their songs. I've read the lyrics and listened to the music without finding any real spiritual meaning. Sometimes, less is more. Trent Reznor is more talented in my opinion.

Trent Reznor is very talented, but Tool is 4 people and Trent is one.

I can't wait until that Tapeworm project gets done!

Alright mate, sorry but that is crap.
The rules of poetry are to be original, find new ways to use words, use of metaphors. Now let me say there are only a few real poets in music, in my opinion Paul Simon in his Graceland era and Leonard Cohen are true poets. Basically, however tortured Maynard is, and however much he may know about buddhism and DMT and hidden cows he's still spelling everything out in SUCH a horribly cliche 'angst rock' way. Seriously.

hey, i was wondering if anybody knew of any songs where the lyrics kinda talk to you, about mind/lsd/mushrooms/metaphysical nifty stuff? i have a couple things by timothy leary and terrence mckenna. anybody have any suggestions please?

Well, if you can appreciate some older music, I'd have to suggest An American Prayer by The Doors. This whole album is Morrison's poetry with music laid out by the rest of the band after his death. I love this album, and think it might be just what you're looking for.

Or maybe Douglas MacArthur's farewell to congress. Hunter S. Thompson describes this as "One of the top 10 mescaline records of all time." Of course your mileage may vary. Shit while on the topic of Thopson, he's not even nearly as eloquent of a speaker as he is a writer (if I can even describe his writing as eloquent), but he's always pretty cool to listen to anyway.

Lets see, try looking for Allen Ginsburg, Ken Kesey, Jack Kerouac. I'm sure if you look you can find plenty of spoken recordings of their works.

If you want to push the envelop a little, try The Beatles,  "Revelation #9" off the White Album or I think there was a Pink Floyd track called something like "The sounds of a thousand furry creatures mating the dark". Oooooh how about Charles Manson, theres lots of recordings of him floating around, kind of portrays (if not exemplifies) the darker side of hallucinating pretty well.

Yeah and Tool is ok too....

Lets all just be friends, and listen to some music =) ?

I think that Nirvana, and Tool, are great, but they I have to listen to them when I'm
in a certain kind of mood. (Different mood for Tool, than Nirvana)
The Amercian Prayer is maybe the best suggestion to "music that make you think"!
Or just listen to "The End" by THE DOORS, it's epic =)

peace out =)

Back to the 'Nirvana stringing together random phrases' post, I have to disagree... Have you ever read the meanings of the songs? I'll post a link at the end of this. Cobain writes about alot of issues in extremely clever ways.

For example...

All the itchy flakes, it is a flaming
All the gels and cremes it is pertaining
To a fungus mold cured by injection
Hope it's only ah, a yeast infection

Oh well, it burns when I - it hurts when I pee
Oh well, it hurts when I - it hurts when I see

Now I vomit cum and diarrhoea
On the tile floor like oatmeal pizza
Fill my toilet bowl full of a cloudy
Puss, I feel the blood becoming chowder rust

Oh well, it burns when I - it hurts when I pee
Oh well, it hurts when I - it hurts when I see

Roll into my bed which does consist of
Lice, bugs and fleas and yellow mucus
Stained dirt, vaseline, toe jam and booger
Stomach acid worms that dance in sugared sludge

Mmmmm ...

Now how excellently does that portray a 'yeast infection'? Pretty damn well I'd say...

http://www.nirvanaclub.com/facts/meanings.htm

Sorry, I just have to defend Nirvana at times like this.
