It's not possible to stop the mind. It will always be there, like a wheel running around and around inside your head. It is better imo to accept this and simply let the thoughts come and go, as Shroomism said. They will always be there so you must learn to ignore them. They will come and go like the ebb and flow of the tide. Accepting this is the first step.
The biggest difference for me is whether or not I choose to open or close my eyes. Keeping your eyes open will allow you to stay in the present moment but keeping them closed will help you not think about your surroundings and instead just be. Many beginners find it easier to close their eyes and concentrate on a mental visualization. This can be a trap though, as you are still concentrating on something and the idea behind mediation is to focus on nothing.
Something I've experimented with is lighting a candle and placing it directly in my line of sight and keeping my eyes just barely cracked. The flame is something to concentrate on. For many who are just beginning meditation, the notion of concentrating on nothing is incomprehensible. It is almost something you stumble upon with practice--the realization that you can completely shut out the mind and focus on pure existence or reality. Practice is the most important thing to remember. If you are serious about developing a habit of meditation, you must do it everyday.

How is music for meditation? Maybe some extremely ambient stuff? Would that be okay?

It's all up to you man. Just remember the idea is to try to focus on nothing. Music might have a counter effect.

Extremely ambient for sure. Instrumentals - preferably ones you're not super familiar with.
Just nothing with English or familiarity IMHO.
And, in honor of the Shroomery, you should focus your thought on the one true thought: dry smashing her shit box.

music can help..ambient type stuff is best I find, drumming is very excellent for reaching deep trance states that's why the shamans use them, to guide you into the spirit realm
ever heard of binaural beats / hemisync? it's basically using offset frequencies one on each side that combine in your brain to produce a different frequency.. fun stuff to fuck with your mind
headphones required
there's tons of this stuff
the coolest thing about meditation is that you can go as deep or as light as you want to go after all you are the master of your reality
