This is Prisoner #1's agar substitue he sent me.It's ingenius and requires no Pc'ing, definately should be in the FAQ.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 pkgs Gelatine pkgs 1 1/2 cups of water 1 beef boullion cube
bring water to a boil stir in boullion cube remove from heat and stir in gelatine pour into petri dishes and allow to cool after cooling inoculate with spores
this 'agar' will break down faster than true agar, but is generaly allows for fast germination, and will allow you to obtain a pure culture

The boullion is for nutrients. I guess you could use dogfood or potato water or something instead, possibly with better results.

I guess that too. I wouldn?t use bouillon since it?s normally used for propagation of bacteria(if used in an agar medium), something you definitely don?t want when growing mushrooms.
How much is "3 pkgs Gelatine pkgs" in grams?

I used 3 3oz packets,I just got the boxes that are the same size as the normal Jello brand boxes. I'm gonna try dogfood instead of boullion too. Anno do you think you are gonna try any of this?

What is all this dogfood talk? How would one prepare dogfood for an agar mixture? Soak it and use the water? Any advantages over using Potato water?
I would assume there would be more nutrients in the dogfood, but really, whats so special about it?

I tried to use gelatine at my beginnings when I couldn't get agar. No boullion BTW. I had better results with beer soaked cardboard. But nothing beats agar, of course.

>whats so special about it? it?s available and fungi seem to like it.
You?d want to grind it and then use it in your agar mixture. Recipes in the FAQ.

I remember that the brand of dog food seemed to mater. The brand was"Purina Puppy Chow".I doubt the person worked for that company.I never entertained the thought of boiling dog food so i dont know if it works, but with so many other ways of culturing mycelium why not try something easier?

The brand doesn?t matter. What matters is that it?s "dry dog food".

I made some plates, i used a PDYA recipe, but Instead of using agar I used 3x the amount of gelatine that the package said to use. I tranfered some mycelum on it, let?s see how it will perform.

it should work anno....I had used it for a few years while I was a broke assed student.... just a word... be attentive... gelatine does break down faster than agar, so be prepaired to do a transfer in about 4-5 days....

Did you ever try to use carrageen? It?s a gelating agent also used for the tart-jelly(?) (the jello like thing that sometimes covers cakes...)

I havent used it as of yet...I't also a seaweed based prouduct....esentialy the same as agar.... Frequently blamed by me for the bad taste of McDonalds milk shakes... ( PUT THE MILK FAT BACK IN YOU BASTARDS!) most likely it would be just as effective as using agar or gelatine....but now you make me courious.....
