any difference if mushrooms are grown in darkness?
    #1389533 - 03/18/03 11:19 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

Can someone tel me whether it makes any difference if mushrooms are grown in complete darkness?

1. Will they grow?

2. Do you get not so good effects from consuming shrooms grown in darkness?

Thanks in advance for info

kramer says the little fun guys need light to tell them which way to grow.
as for effects if they grow with no light the should still be good

they grow all kinds of directions, It's really whack. it's almost like thier retarded or something. they go sideways, down, do loops, lay flat on the substrate. seems like every way but up.

the shrooms are still potent as they should be.

Just for personal information, say they had light, Your saying that a UV light wont make the slightest bit of difference compared to a regular light?

incadasent, florursent, flouresent grow light, indirect sunlight, all work. a night light would even be enough. The rule is if you can see them, then they're getting enough light.

it will grow, but everytime I leave them in the dark they always seems to stay small. The caps are undeveloped and it has no color. Just a white long mushroom with a tiny cap on top that never opens. I think its beneficial to give it a little light.

A member of the forum (I believe Kykeon) did an experiment and found that fruit bodies grow at a faster rate while in the dark.  Light is most important for initial pin-formation.

EDIT: I found Kykeon's original post  : http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=1061773&Forum=All_Forums&Words=102615&Match=Usernumber&Searchpage=21&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=1051639&Search=true#Post1061773
