Military/Life Questions

Ok so I just got back from the Navy recruiting office two days ago and they said I can finally process at the MEPs center. Its more complicated than that though.
I have a small record. First. The only charge I was ever found guilty of was possession of a small amount of marijuana (.5 grams to be exact). I served my ARD probation for that charge and then I continued to get that charge expunged from my record.
Second. A long time ago I was narced out by my friend for getting him a 10 bag of marijuana. What happened is he came to my house and asked me to get him a 10. I left my house and I went down the road to pick it up for him. I came back and gave it to him. Never did the cops waiting outside in the car see anything. My so called friend was a confidential informant. One year after this incident I was charged with a misdemeanor for possession of a small amount of marijuana and a felony for the delivery of a controlled substance. I found out there was a warrant for my arrest and so I turned myself in at the police barracks. There I talked with a cop and he confessed that he knew I was not dealing. He then proceeded to withdraw all of my charges. I never went to court, never paid fines, and never did probation for these two charges. Recently I got them expunged with permission from the district attorney.
ok... now here is what my issue is.
I have been trying to get into the Navy for a long time now. The recruiters were able to see my felony on my police backround check. Usually this is an automatic disqualification but the fact that on my criminal docket the charges were listed as withdrawn gave me a small chance. The recruiters told me I had to fill out waiver forms and that they would have to be approved by the military.
well.. Like I said earlier I had the felony expunged. ALL my charges are expunged. The recruiters said that didnt matter. Well two days ago I went into the recruiting station and I told them to look up my record. They couldn't find one. They instantly changed their opinion. Now they are going to send me to MEPs to get processed. There is still a possibility I will get disqualified if they do an FBI backround check and find my expunged charges. My plan is to take a lesser job and hope that they dont proceed to do an FBI backround check. The recruiters have high hopes for me. Does anyone know how often they do FBI backround checks? Do I have a chance?
My cousin who is 24 year army has experience with recruiting. She said I should go for it. Also she said.. If I get disqualified for the navy that I should try the national guard because they will let nearly anyone in. Is that true? If the national guard found my felony would they still let me in?
Lastly... I was looking at www.kbrjobs.com and they looked interesting. A friend told me about civilian contracting jobs through the government etc.. I wonder.. Do they do FBI backround checks?
If anyone has any input please be open.
Serious responses only please.

The navy does infact do fingerprints through police and FBI.
Yes, a college degree will help your case, some.
Good luck.

I've had several family members in the Navy, specifically. I also plan on joining. I know these things. MEPS 100% does FBI checks. If your recruiter said you have a chance at MEPS since you have no "charges" give it a shot
no guarantee though.

I knew guys that got in for marijuana, you have to get a "waiver" basically.
Also it really helps you if you can get a hold of the "best" recruiter in your state/region.
They can really swing things. It helps in who you know.
Yah you going to MEPS? Yah that is boring as all hell.
Good luck hope you get in.
