A little expedition ... (Pics)
    #1388777 - 03/18/03 05:21 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I went on a hike today, took some pictures... Not much in the way of mushrooms, but, I found a few lizards. I was looking for some snakes, but, it's still too cold to find any right now! :frown:

Let me introduce you to the beautiful California forest...

Here's one of the only two mushrooms I found today... Both were Chantrelles. Not bad for just finding only two mushrooms!

Here is a few lizards I found. One obviously being a bluebelly, and the other one I was not sure on. Gumby, maybe you know? It was cold out, so they were easy to pick up and snap a shot of. They actually liked the warmth of my hand!
*NO LIZARDS WERE HARMED IN THE MAKING OF THIS POST*

And a creepy red spider I found after flipping up a peice of wood...

once a gain, great pics.
i am glad you have found some chantarells, as i'll be heading up to bidwell park region next week sometime to check some good spots.
i notice that, as close as we are geographicaly, you seem to find a lot more reptiles than do i, are you just looking harder?

Nice BIG chanterelles! And great photos, as usual.

Are you getting to the end of your mushroom season? You've certainly had a productive one.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks guys !

Yeah, unfortuently, I fear the end is drawing near. We did get some really nice rains the past few days, which, I think would have sprouted a lot of mushrooms, but, I didn't really find much! :frown: I think I'll have to venture further into the forests, and higher in elevation along the rainshadow sides of the mountains.

Concrete: Today I was in an area where there are scarlet king snakes, rattle snakes, different lizards of all sorts, and a few different snakes as well. I cant remember them all... but yes, I was looking for them like I was looking for mushrooms. I was turning over logs and peices of wood and whatnot. I didn't find many lizards , just because its still too cold!!

I'm thinking that the lizard you found is a female Western Fence Lizard(Sceloporus occidentalis). You found it near some rocks or dry logs, right?

We've got Eastern Fence Lizards out here(they look just the same), they're incredibly fast... I'm supprised you caught that one. Nice find/catch

Hey Gumby... that would be the one!!

My friend who knows a little about lizards/snakes said as well that it was probably some sort of fence lizard, but he wasn't really sure.

It was a sandy area, with lots of logs and rocks to pick up for sure. I found this lizard under a metal sheet plate, left from the 30's from when they were mining for sand to supply cement/brick for San Francisco. (I talked to an old dude about it for a good 10 minutes).

It was right before dusk, so not the best time to hunt for snakes or anything, but, really made the lizards easy to catch... the temperature was in the low to mid 50's... that made it easy!

Yep, thats a male western fence lizard, I'm keeping a male and female pair of eastern fence lizards and they do look the same as a western, neat little guys they are. I also have a pair of chinese water dragons and a male panther chameleon.

Nice pics!
