Need easy and free solution to air exchange for your casing?

i hear a lot of new people planning these elaborate set-ups for growing involving coolmists/ultrasonics, air pumps, hepa filters, large multi-shelf enclosed units 'terrariums' but i really think simplicity is key. really really basic idea that i've seen mentioned before in various teks or postings but i would like to stress how simply this is done. for a casing, usually either the bottom of a rubbermaid tub is cased directly or a pan such as cat litter boxes (as shown below) are set into a rubbermaid bin. the problem this generates is that CO2 is denser than O2 so it is going to settle in the bottom of whatever container you have the casings in. so whats the logical solution? drain the CO2 out of the bottom and allow fresh O2 to migrate in. to do this you turn the rubbermaid upside down and set the casing trays on the lid. (note: you obviously can't directly case inside the tub for this to work) then leave the tub slightly ajar on the lid and air exchange will take care of itself.

A great idea, and one that will no doubt benefit during fruiting.
But, if we study up on our gas laws, we learn that difussion takes place in any system that is not kept at close to absolute zero. If the molecules are moving, they are low enough in mass to overcome gravity's pull. When object with mass move, they are said to have energy, or more accurately kinetic energy. Therefore, though a small difference in concentration due to mass can be observed, in a closed system with molecular motion (any heat/energy), gas molecules will disperse evenly throughout space, bouncing into one another and the confines of the system until randomized.
Open a chemistry or physics text book, and soon you will understand that air exchange (molecular exchange) is most important, rather than the elevation of the mycelium or the position of ventilation holes.
After all, ozone has more mass than oxygen, nitrogen, and slightly more than carbon dioxide, yet we do not see our atmosphere layered as such. In fact, all we see is a greater concentration of all gases near sea-level, with the space above being less concentrated or "thinner."
But, then again, what the fuck do I know? I'm just an ape with a computer

So did you use any humidification in that terrarium?

Very nice DragonFly. I only wish this would work with terrariums that already have been made right-side up

i've seen similar setups that work well for casings . if the container is not completely filled with casings, as in the pic above, then a tray of perlite can be added . temperature would also be a factor . this would not trap enough humidity for cakes though. if you want to experiment with self sufficient terrariums for cakes read ; Chronic's Tek
