USB 2.0

I have recently found a great deal on an external USB 2.0 hard drive. My trusty computer is stuck in the 90's with USB 1.0. USB 1 is fine for mice, keyboards, and memory card readers but a hard drive would easily saturate it's measly bandwidth and slow to a crawl. I am not aware if I am capable of using my existing USB 1 ports/hub in combination with a USB 2.0 addin card. My other option would be to invest in a Firewire addin card and get a firewire enabled external drive. Firewire has some speed advantages but is cinsiderably pricier. If i can get away with using USB 1 and 2 in the same system I think that is what i want to do. Any input?

USB 1 and 2 should both work on one system.. well now it sounds like you've already got the knowledge you need, now it just comes down to descision-time: If you prefer speed, DEFINITELY go with Firewire If you're more concerned with price (like me ) then USB2 should be fine man.

thank you... speed isn't that much of an issue since the drive will be primarily for storage. in fact, I'm looking to offload my burdgeoning internal drives so i can do some video processing with them(which is where the speed becomes a factor)

I have a USB 2.0 external hard drive which works fine with a 1.1 usb port. It works fine.. slow for transferes, but it works. adding a 2.0 usb port shouldnt be too expensive and should be fast enough

If you plug a USB 2 device into a USB 1 port, the device will only run at USB 1 speeds. This includes your hub. You'll need to replace it as well. Simply add a USB 2 card and your problem will be solved. They're in th 20 - 30 dollar range. I use one with a external Maxtor drive which was unimpressive before the installation of a USB card and which brought tears of joy after the card was installed.

i'm fully aware that USB 2 devices are backwards compatible and will run at the slower bandwidth. i don't want to do that for 2 obvious reasons A) my USB 1 bus is already staurated with multiple devices and B) i would like decent performance from this drive. My main question was whether or not both iterations of USB can peacefully coexist in the same system. if not, firewire would be the option. firewire has more bandwidth but not so much more to justify the costs of the drives when i'm using the drive primarily for storage.

CNET says usb 2.0 is faster than fire wire.
Quote:
USB 2.0, which can move data up to 480mbps, compared with the pokey 12mbps handled by USB 1.1, provides stiff competition for FireWire, a technology invented by Apple Computer that transports data at 400mbps. Partly due to delays in launching USB 2.0, FireWire has gained in popularity in the past two years. But with USB 2.0 on the market, FireWire temporarily loses its title as the speed king. Perhaps most importantly, FireWire also represents a more costly option for PC makers than USB 2.0, which could undermine its acceptance.
