If you want to grow contamination!
I believe that hay has more nutrients (that the mycelium doesn't really care about) than straw. My friend's attempts with hay or barley/oat straw mix have been disastrous! Try to find (wheat) straw -- it rules.

if timothy hay is all you can find, pick through it vary carefully.
green straw is ok . avoid grass leaf, seeds, and straw knuckles .
this is a lot of work, it might be better just to use shredded cardboard .

Here are some results using Timothy hay. Personally I don't find them very impressive. But other factors may have been the cause. So I can't say if it was the hay or other reasons. The best documented result are using straw..Hay is differrent than straw. Those differences are the reason straw works better and hay works..less than better... If you need the reasons why ,, then ... I would hope someone like Anno...would post and explain to you why straw is better for "dung lovers" snd such.
