Julian Assange 60 Minutes Interview

I thought he absolutely nailed it. He effectively dispelled ridiculous notions that he was an anarchist/subversive, and gave intelligent, well-thought responses to Steve Kroft's leading questions.
Kroft got a lot of flak after the interview by journalists saying that he sounded like a representative for the "establishment", but I think that approach was necessary for Assange to effectively demonstrate what he and his organization are about. Kroft also gave a post-interview interview about his time with Assange and was very complimentary and stated that he was "definitely a journalist" and "definitely a publisher", not a subversive pot-stirrer.
I also found it interesting that Wikileaks has played a large role in the upheavals of the Tunisian and Egyptian governments.

Post-interview with Steve Kroft:
What were your thoughts on the interview? Do you think he has done a good job at polishing his PR skills and vindicating himself to some degree?

I think Wikileaks has refined their operation. I also think they are a new vital institution in themselves.
I think the overwhelming consensus is - where do we go from here?

yah, good question. What now? It is very important to realize the "checks and balances" that seem to have gone by the wayside in recent decades once served a purpose for the people by the people. Now that we can only get "wal-mart for president" we need (desperately) new systems of checks and balances in order to maintain an actual democracy and not a virtual dictatorship by corporate dogma.
agree??

What will keep wikileaks from selling out and becoming big government's new media-whore and a tool to hoodwink the public??
In other words, what checks and balances exist to keep wikileaks in line with it's own mission statement?
How will we be able to hold wikileaks accountable??

He seemed very sharp and prepared for the interview. I'm surprised it was as even handed as it was.

No. They're smarter than that. They'll call attention to the stuff they really want you to believe by wringing their hands condemning it.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of government officials. Not everything each one of them says is government policy. For instance, nothing Joe Biden says means anything at all. If you can get around the umms and ahhs to even translate it.

Like it or not that's accurate. It is monumentally stupid to pick any bit of bullshit one of these jackasses says and say it is policy supported by the government. Really stupid.
