That isn't a portabello. It looks like some sort of inky cap. How did you try to grow them?

The setup is plastic tub with two 6" airstones on the bottom with a 100 gal wisper aquarium air pump. Perlite is covering the airstones and then there is enough water to cover the perlite. On top of the perlite is Substrate mixture of hay and horse poo. The casing is the 50/50.

Yeah, Coprinopsis sp.
I suppose your substrate (manure) was contaminated with them, and was not properly pasteurized.

What about the culture? Where did that come from? Did you use colonized grain to inoculate it? Inky caps tend to be a pretty common "contaminate" mushroom.

The culture came from a company called mushroom adventures

On line I could not find a culture of Portabealla Mushrooms in stock or maybe i could not find a website that had them. so this is what i am starting out with. I figured from here i can do the babe bottle tk and clone what grows.

I'm a little confused. Did you buy a culture or did you buy a portabello kit and then put it on top of some perlite in a tub and cased it? Did you prepare your own substrate for this project or did you purely use it from the kit? If you are getting inky caps growing out of your project I would say that you probably won't get any portobellos.

Used the kit and cased it.  I did get two portobellos so far.  Ok that is a relief that it's a different kind of mushroom I thought i was doing something really wrong. I do have one portabella growing right now.  And i did pick two out of the fruiting chamber.

When should I pick it so I can get a good spore imprint.

Oh by the way I saw some of your mushroom projects. Very nice!!!

Ah OK cool! Then it sounds like everything is working the way it is supposed to. If you arn't getting strong flushed you might want to mist your casing a bit. Its hard to say exactly though because I've never grown portobellos. To get a spore print you'll want to pick it after the veil has broken and the cap has planed out.

Thanks for the kinds words about my grows!

Picture of the first portabella mushroom From this project

Is it ok for the temp to be in the mid 70's? is this to high for portabella? At night the temp drops to 58-62 I do have a fish tank heater on the bottom but the lowest setting is 68 so I have it disconnected because I thought mid 70's is bad for the mushrooms

Ch hell great link. Thank you very much. Thank you guys so much for your help. This has been a very confusing project and if this is successful I will be using the mushrooms for my business. I have a very unique situation. I own a bakery. I have access to lots of flour. One of the ingredients that we use for our multi grain bead is called vita grain 9 grain http://www.gusts.com and it looks like bird seed in a way very hard I think I could use that and the rice flour we have. What do you guys think? I'm trying to reduce our cost and only use supplies that I have direct access too.

They are cracked grains so it would not be a good choice too many starches.  You could try it but I think you will end up with a mess.
