Will the mycelia beat the cobweb?
    #1377376 - 03/15/03 02:53 AM (20 years, 11 months ago)

My three containers with dung all has a thin layer of cobweb. Will the mycelia conquer it or will the cobweb attack the mycelia?

I have seen that the cobweb (if that?s what it is) is slower than the mycelia in growth, so could it be okay to just ignore the "cobweb" and go on with all the procedures (fruiting, harvesting, tripping..)?

Cobweb grows faster than mycelium and mycelium will not attack the cobweb. You've got to get rid of the mold if you want to have mushrooms.
Try to mist a 1:10 solution of perioxide:water and see if it solves the problem.

then.. maybe it?s not cobweb...

it?s grey and grows on the surface, but now it seems like it?s stopped growing, I scraped away most of it from the surface..

I don?t have peroxide =/

well, maybe it?s some other mold.. I live in Scandinavia so maybe the variety is different here.

Perioxide = H202. You can buy it in most places.
BTW, cobweb looks grey and grows on the surface. Give it air and some light.

Ok, I might buy peroxide when I get the chance (I'm kind of far away from stores right now..).

I've given it air and light so I think that's keeping the cobweb down.

What I was thinking was this: If the mycelia colonizes all of the dung, even the dung where cobweb is growing, wouldn't that make it impossible for the cobweb to develope? I've seen that the mycelia is spreading fast, and the cobweb is just a thin layer on the shallow surface of the dung. Wouldn't total shroom colonization prevent the cobweb from getting the sufficient amount of nutrients?

Well, that's what I hope....

With time maybe, but cobweb can develop in the mycelium itself, it's nasty sometimes.

is it dangerous to my health (the shrooms that grow from that)?
or will it even inhibit the shroomproduction??

if not, then who cares? =)

Although eating anything from contaminated substrates can be dangerous, cobweb has low risk factor involved as it grows practically just on the surface. If i was to risk keeping shrooms from a contaminated cobweb substrate, i would only choose the shrooms not near the infected area.

Yes, it inhibits shroom production, it must be treated.

To each, its own.

thank you very much MAIA

Do you know where to find any more information and details about the cobweb's inhibiting of the shroomproduction?

Make a search on google or altavista with queries such as "mushroom farms" or "mushroom cultivation stages". Many guides on the web are somewhat generalistic regarding contamination but they have some info about the issue.
