Outdoor growers: Mushrooms for those who respond!
    #1387176 - 03/18/03 08:43 AM (14 years, 15 days ago)

Does one need to wait for cakes to colonize fully before casing in a flower pot for outdoor fruiting?

The cakes are BRF and verm or BRF and perlite (btw, perlite cakes suck - contam easy and dry out fast). The casing mix will be 60 verm/40 peat with oyster shell added. The inside of the pot and the casing mixture will be sterilzed. Rye grass seed will be planted on top of the casing mix.

Thanks

Would a peroxide dunk prior to casing help any? The cakes are all 80% finished or better. Some are stalled from lack of moisture.

kramer has noticed that cakes that did not grow agressivly(grow for a min. and stall, take forever to colonize...ect) don't usually produce much by way of fruits.that being said.kramer tells the story of saving a dozen of stalled pint jars .emptied out the contents and clean off all the good mycelium(kramer rinsed it really good in cold tap water.the idea is to have only fully colonized chunks)  then put it all in a clean plastic mixing bowl and cover w/saran rap.  in a day or two the cakes should show some fluffy growth.it is now ready to case or spawn.it may be worth mentioning that kramer then used it as experimental spawn.he got 1 small flush and then it contaminated. oh well...better than nothing  kramer says to inspect the mycelium reall good when taking it out of the bowl(for molds and such)

So, removing the uncolonized substrate yielded a flush but the casing still contaminated?

My friend was hoping that growing outdoors might prevent contamination, even if the uncolonized substrate was added in the mycelial layer.

Oh, and btw, the casing will have a top and bottom layer.

kramer says that the only uncolonized substrate in your box/pot/whatever better be poo(composted) or straw or both(use the cakes for spawn) .any left over substrate from the jar is almost a 100% chance of contamination.kramer wants to mention that this was with his first poo experiments and he was still mixing his shit too wet

i'm not sure that your idea of outdoor growing is quite right. growing outdoors doesn't make contams impossible, and you'll still need to supply lots of water, substrate, and food (like poo and straw).

definitely wait for your substrate to be 100% before doing anything with it, whether it's cakes, casings, spawning, inoculating or whatever.

good luck, mr bigjohnsson

I agree with you, but my friend's stalled perlite BRF cakes are going to need to be birthed. I think he may do this:

1. Wash cakes by soaking in a cold perioxide solution for a few hours.

2. Remove uncolinized substrate from cakes by rubbing gently any exposed portion until all is white.

3. Place pasturized/drained poo into bottom of sterilized pot; ~ 5 cm.

4. Crumble mycelium over poo until a 10 cm layer is created.

5. Place sterile casing mix over mycelial layer; ~ 2 cm thick.

6. Cover casing mix with a .5 cm thick layer of grass seed.

7. Cover pot with saran until rye seed sprouts (5 days).

8. Uncover and place in a shadey spot. Water lightly every day with distilled water.

kramer says some casing on the bottemwould help a lot and keep that bad boy moist and NO direct sun(it'll heat the pot and kill the mycelium

So, it should be stratified like this:

Rye seed
Casing mix
Mycelium
Manure
Casing mix

?

Looks good, though my friend would combine the dung and mycelium rather than layer it.

I was hoping to speed up fruiting time by separating the two so that the mycelium on top can fruit while colonizing the poo below for later flushes.

Do you think not mixing the two will increase the chance of contams showing up later on? Or perhaps multiple layers, like Moe's outdoor tek? Hmmm...
