Same here. The time I spend on a keyboard justifies it, but only if it really is that much better than other cheaper keyboards.

there is a really good chart comparing membrane, scissor, and mechanical keyboards on this page:
http://www.ergocanada.com/ergo/keyboards/mechanical_vs_membrane_keyswitches.html

the short answer is that mechanical keyboards are more durable and comfortable under heavy use.

it really is an order of magnitude better. i dont know if i could go back to those cheap membrane keys again. between that and my ThinkPad im in keyboard heaven.

the Das isnt far and away better than the Model M. they are pretty close. i like the Das a little more though.

and not to say the Model M was inferior.. i fuckin loved that one too.

and im not too crazy about used keyboards. they can get pretty nasty and you dont know how hard they were used before.

for gaming, i always found the thinner keys that resemble a laptop, like in the first one you linked, to feel far more spam-able

STAL

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Illuminated-Ultrathin-Keyboard-Backlighting/dp/B001F51G16

Not too expensive and has nice backlighting with very smooth and quiet keystrokes.  I love mine and am glad I didn't get a Razer.

edit - maybe I will consider this one, a little cheaper http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.211324200

its almost like an extra verification.. yes, you just hit the key. its a third type of tactile feedback, the other two being the actual feel of the button under your finger and seeing the letter appear on the screen.

i think it makes typing more accurate and faster (since the key doesnt need to be pushed all the way down for the click). its obviously possible to live without it.

one area where it is extremely helpful is with blind users. i think weve all hit a key on a crappy keyboard at one point or another only to realize we didnt hit it hard enough. blind users have no way of seeing their mistakes unless the screen reader reads it back to them (which can be a pain in the ass). clicky keys give them that verification.

more than any of this though, the durability is probably the biggest advantage. i burn through keyboards at an insane rate just because i type so much.. i rarely use the mouse.

to put it into perspective, keyboards ive broken include a cheaper Logitech wired one and one from the "high end" DiNovo line, Microsoft Ergo, a Dell one, a few eMachines ones, and the one on my ThinkPad twice in the past 4 or 5 years. the ThinkPad is definitely well made.. i just use it constantly. they all wear out

ive had the Das for a few years now and its just as good as the day i bought it. the Model M i used to have would probably still work too.. lost that in a move though. oh well.

i suppose there could be a security advantage to a silent keyboard... there's a plate underneath a keyboard that is being struck in different locations, and the clicks make different sounds, much like a drum... some many years ago i read about berkeley students who had programmed software to decipher audio recordings of keyboard clicks into the typed text.

I looked at all those keyboards and they all look like crap to me. (I just wanted to see what PC people use.)

I like the chiclet style (Apple) keyboard with the short, fast key presses. I can transition from my laptop to a desktop seamlessly, because it's the same keyboard. HP copied for their envy, so I imagine it's close to the same thing.

One thing for sure, I could never switch back to a keyboard like the ones posting in the thread. I have a windows desktop on my desk at work, and I dread using that keyboard every time. Hell most times I just RDP, so I can use my local keyboard. (Too lazy and use it too infrequently to setup Synergy)

(On a side note, not trying to derail the thread or anything by mentioning Apple. I was just seriously shocked that people still desire those gigantic keyboards, as I gave them up a long time ago in favor of smaller keys.)

Haha!  I have been bitten by the Das Keyboard bug, so I do my usual snooping for deals and coupon codes.  I find nothing.  I do find a forum somewhere that talks of an old coupon code not working, and one of the members suggests the 'educational discount'.  So I look around and find a paragraph describing a supposed educational discount, but I have to email them.  So I email them telling them Im in college and though I can touch type the alphabet I have trouble with the numbers and special characters which I need for coding.  They email me back with a 24% discount!  FTW!

I dunno man, I can't type for crap on those apple keyboards compared to a more "standard" keyboard with some actual feedback.  Trying to type on those keyboards is frustrating for me, even.

Web developer/programmer. I type all day long, typing special character and sequences with awkward CarmelCasings. I don't know what level of typing you guys do, and certainly not claiming to type the most. I'm just saying of all the keyboard, the chiclet style serves me the best and is nice to be able to type directly on my laptop and have the same keyboard I use all the time. I also feel less cramping in my hands over time.

Supposedly some people make that last little fraction of improvement in their typing speed when they are forced to not look at the keyboard and therefore forced to finally learn all the keys.  It also makes remapping keys less awkward, because the map can never conflict with the key markings.

I did when I accidentally bought a French AZERTY keyboard, which has all the symbols in different places and combinations.

Sorry, I don't see any blinding LED lights or disco balls- can't be very good.

BTW. I've used buckling spring keyboards a while ago.  I presume those are considered mechanical- yes?  Are the other mechanical keyboards different/better /worse in your eyes?  I'd like something with some more feel to it and that's a bit sturdy, but I'm not sure if I want the resistance that I recall the buckling key keyboard, that I used to use, having.  Maybe my memory is exaggerating the difference though.

Can you or anyone else comment on whether the cheaper "Cherry" brand keyboards (or their tecnology used by other brands) are particularly worse than more expensive keyboards like the one you've got?  example:  $66 USD:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823333054

UPDATE:  Found nice description that, if accurate, is quite comprehensive.  It seems to relate that the Cherry MX switches, used on the line I linked to and many other brands, are indeed 'lighter' in terms of actuating force required then the buckling spring mechanism I recall being somewhat demanding.

This is one thing I think is great about the internet: the mainstream completely ignores this market segment, but a few people out of a thousand might have particular tastes or unique knowledge and demands, and they can exchange information and even cultivate a new market segment altogether!  I couldn't imagine a retailer ever providing the information these people have dug up through manufacturer specifications and so forth!  dbbdbdydyydydudud

Supposedly some people make that last little fraction of improvement in their typing speed when they are forced to not look at the keyboard and therefore forced to finally learn all the keys.  It also makes remapping keys less awkward, because the map can never conflict with the key markings.

its a little of both for me. i went from about 50 wpm to just shy of 100 when i bought the Das. and i remap a lot of keys to better fit into my workflow... Caps Lock is now Ctrl, PrtSc Break and Scroll Lock are now controls for MPD, etc..

as for the Apple keyboard, i can use those for quick, little things.. i wouldnt want to use it long term though. there isnt really any tactile feedback at all.

oh and DieCommie, thats good to know about the discount.. order one man. you wont be disappointed.

I thought the same thing when I first started using one of the newer style Apple keyboards... but after getting used to it, I can fly on the thing.  My only real gripe is how quickly it gets dirty.  White keys?  Really?

Just got done ordering a Das Keyboard.  I ended up getting the Ultimate S, non-silent version.  The regular and silent use two different type of key switches, and I read a bit on those to find out which one I wanted.

I got a 24% discount by emailing a copy of my student ID to them.  They now also have refurbished available, but only a 15% student discount on those.

Not too expensive and has nice backlighting with very smooth and quiet keystrokes.  I love mine and am glad I didn't get a Razer.

Exactly same keyboard, man, I love it.  I type a shit load between writing and coding, and I haven't had any complaints yet.

Also, STAL, this one is pretty cool too:

Optimus Maximus Keyboard

Every key is a programmable OLED screen:

Of course, it's only like $1,600.00 or something

I use the full USB at work. They only change I would have is the (alternate) function key like on the laptop and wireless keyboard. I backwards delete a lot faster (and many other tasks) when using the fn button apposed to moving my entire hand.

I can keep the keys looking brand new with some alcohol wipes. I have never had any problem with that, but I certainly would prefer black keys considering my MBP has not a spec of white on the thing!

Seriously though, I pity everyone still using a mouse. (Taking gaming out the equation, I am speaking strictly of a productivity work flow.) I switched to the standalone trackpad Apple released back in the fall. It's easily the best peripheral I have bought. It took a month to get the mouse of habbit, but after getting use to it, I could never revert back...it's way too painful. I get a plethora of multi-touch gestures that have been pinnacle to my work flow. Browsing, inertia scrolling, switching between windows are some of the advantages I gained by ditching the mouse. The magic mouse sucks as it can't mimic a 5 button mouse since it has no real expose support. The mighty mouse, well I just didn't care for it. Bottom line, I use to get carpal tunnel in my hands after prolonged mouse usage. Endless scrolling would bring pain to my finger. Since switching to the trackpad full time, I feel no discomfort and scrolling is a lot faster and easier. All of this in conjunction with regular use of hot keys, makes for a real pleasurable experience. I with other platforms would incorporate gestures like Apple has. It's changes the way I use a computer. (The battery life is probably the Apple has put out with a peripheral which ironically is usually very poor. Don't compare the battery life to a logictech because it will certainly be put to shame. That said, it does a ton more than a logic tech mouse could, and it doesn't require a shitty dongle.)

(I use a second monitor and external keyboard at a desk, effectively making my laptop into a portable desktop so a mouse or something to move the cursor is naturally needed in the setup as the tracpad on my machine is out of comfortable reach.)

That would be awesome.  I love the tit-mouse, and Im sure I would end up extensivly using it on my desktop like I do on my laptop.

yeah. so much faster than any other mouse. and more comfortable too since you never take your hands off the keyboard.

really hard trying to find a laptop you can deal with after getting used to that.

I just received the silent version.  Definitely not silent, I cant really imagine what the normal one sounds like.  That said I really like typing on it, though is it worth the $$?  Debatable I guess

Yea, I do really like it.  It was worth the money.  I got the blank one and have certainly noticed that I do the special characters faster and with less errors now.  Typing on it is fun and easy.  Plus, my wife likes it too and she says she never even notices that it is blank.
