Like that is even possible. they would have to shut down phones and cable at the same time, oh wait, what about satellite. Nothing short of synchronized EMP blasts could kill the internet.

What systems are they talking about in this article anyway?
-------------------- "Have you ever seen what happens when a grenade goes off in a school? Do you really know what you’re doing when you order shock and awe? Are you prepared to kneel beside a dying soldier and tell him why he went to Iraq, or why he went to any war?" "The things that are done in the name of the shareholder are, to me, as terrifying as the things that are done—dare I say it—in the name of God. Montesquieu said, "There have never been so many civil wars as in the Kingdom of God." And I begin to feel that’s true. I think you are referring to something else. Not a month or so ago one or a few torrent sites were blocked from their DNS domains with a large amount of counterfeit goods websites. In this case just the URL was diverted, accessing the sites by IP was still possible. Many torrent websites have moved over to using foreign domains that are not part of DNS domains (like .it/.me) and sometimes foreign hosting as well.

yeah i remember that too.. there were lik 50+ sites shut down. But Odumba is specifically trying to pass this bill to combat "cyberterrorism". I think its just something they created in response to their stuxnet virus they created in order to panic everyone. OR like the tinfoilers and myself believe..its just another way to start eroding freedom of speech/information

I suspect it has more to do with WikiLeaks and the stupid "anonymous" DDOS attacks that followed. The government wants the right to isolate DDOS attacks that they label cyberterrorism. Not a bad idea, but unfortunately the government isn't the most knowledgeable when it comes to technology, as demonstrated by Ted Stevens, and is often fairly corrupt when it comes to supporting lobbying groups such as the RIAA and MPAA. Mixing incompetence with corruption is not something that I would want to bet against freedom. Let the industry self-regulate.

They might not be as inept as they often seem. Stuxnet was an elegant piece of work.

I don't think it's related to DOS attacks, the whole bill is just getting permission to preform one big DOS attack on america (identical outcome).
Edit: perhaps your right and they just don't understand the issues.

I never claimed the Jews were stupid or incompetent.

I'm only a little concerned about how it will work or how long of downtime that could result. I mean if it was done to avert a cyber attack or something for like 15 min that wouldn't be difficult for many to deal with. As a Canadian I am unsure how this will effect me, if I will be able to access content foreign to the US or what (unlikely I suspect). Or what the implications for international users would be.
I am unsure weather working on a bill like this, at the same time as the whitehouse is criticizing Egypt for blocking twitter to silence dissent in it's streets, is hypocritical or not. The US has a history of reining in regulation under guises like terrorism that often are used against non-violent organizations/actions.

My only concern would be that they do it, claim attack, and just go about adjusting websites to reflect how great our president is. Changing headlines, news stories etc. Call me a tinfoiler but it's something I wouldn't put past this administration of doing.

I dissagree, this administration has passed up a lot of opportunities at positive publicity, I don't see why they would go to such lengths just to get fake positivity only on the internet.

Look at what's going on in egypt right now. Mass riots against the government, and conveniently, the internet and cell phone services have been turned off. Makes it kind of hard to organize a revolt when you need to go door to door to let people know about it.
It's funny that the us gov. Is denouncing such a practice. It's clear that's exactly why they want the kill switch.

If I understand most cellphones aren't routed through the internet. The only service that I think is, is twitter.
