Marijuana Legalization Bills Filed in Massachusetts, Washington January 25, 2011 - Drug War Chronicle
Legislators in two states on opposite ends of the country have introduced bills that would legalize marijuana. In both cases, the bills are a continuation of legalization efforts that did not reach fruition last year.
In Washington state Rep. Mary Lou Dickerson, chair of the Human Services Committee, Tuesday introduced House Bill 1150, which would legalize marijuana for persons 21 and over, provide for regulation and taxation of marijuana commerce, and see pot sold through state liquor stores, with growers licensed by the Liquor Control Board.
"Drug cartels and black-market dealers have made it easier for kids to get cannabis than alcohol," Dickerson said. "The Liquor Control Board has a proven track record of shielding kids from its products. I’m confident our bill will break the back of cannabis crime-syndicate profits and make it possible to preserve vital health services across Washington in these very difficult budget times."
The bill has 13 cosponsors and has been referred to the Committee on Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. That's where it died last year.
On the opposite coast, Massachusetts Rep. Ellen Story (D-Amherst) Monday filed House Docket Number 1091 (H1091 for short), An Act to Regulate and Tax the Cannabis Industry. The bill will be assigned a bill number later.
It would immediately remove all of Massachusetts criminal and civil penalties upon persons over the age of 21 who possess or cultivate marijuana for personal or share it with other adults. It would also set up a system to regulate, license, and tax commercial cultivation, possession, and distribution of marijuana when such regulation is lawful under federal law.
As in Washington, the Massachusetts bill didn't make it through last year. But advocates in both states continue to plug away.

It brings such joy to see all these legalization efforts, the thing that is concerning me.

What's wrong with legalization and regulation? The law says that people can still grow their own and share it with friends. Your blue frowny seem out of place.

I live in MA now and I'm moving to Florida before too long so this bill is probably going to pass. It would definitely go along with the pattern of bad luck I've had recently.

I live in MA and I've never really thought about my state being one of the most pro-active towards marijuana legalization but I have been pleasantly surprised. I hope that some day in the not-too-long distant future my state can make it legal.

I'm all for taxation and regulation, I just don't think the Liquor Control Board. should be the ones in Washington state to decide who gets to grow and sell it.

It's the only way, dude. If you haven't noticed, EVERYTHING is taxed and regulated, except for the church. Every one must bathe in the sweet, untaxed light of jesus.

I can't believe how greedy some people are, I personally use it for an eating disorder 90% of the time but I can't get my card because of legal trouble, they don't care if I drink because it's legal. It's like some of you just thrive on things to be angry about, so it'll be taxed, whoopy doo! Now go drive around with your taxed gas in your taxed car lubed with taxed oil to the 711 and get a pack of taxed smokes, and get me a beer, here's 5 cents for deposit :P
honestly mean no offense to anyone but pot smokers against legalization makes me sick to my stomach...literally, now I'm going to go make my bitters tea so I can choke down a few bites of food since I'm not allowed my precious meds because they remain illegal thanks to those that vote no on these issues.

That's called Hempest.
But seriously, I have a hard time seeing Massachusetts legalize. To many Catholics and suit-wearing nine-to-fivers, too few hippies.

It's basically legal anyways in mass, but you are very spot on when it comes to them legalizing.
I've been medical for years so I don't know what it's like to have illegal weed with me. Thinking of that is so weird. I've just adjusted to weed is legal after 4 years, it's normal for me now.

Any step toward lowering penalties is progress. It doesn't matter who is in control of the growing/selling. If possession is legal, how would they prove where you purchased it from? Stop saying negative things about progress because of your ignorance.
