ubuntu help
    #13832729 - 01/22/11 05:36 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

my wife has been having some of her family over to use our computer which isnt a problem, but i dont trust them as far as downloading. i also deal with some shit online that needs to be some what private.

i would like to download ubuntu and have a dual boot, but i really dont know what im doing. what i would like to get from this is a dual boot with windows having a password. i would also like to be able to monitor what goes on in the ubuntu os.

if you could help me out and walk me through this that would be great!

thanks

Why don't you just set up a guest account for windows?

cause its only limited use with the guest account. with ubuntu they can still have full access with some limitations, but it would be a little more protected.

am i missing something with the guest account?

What do they need to do that they can't do with a guest account?

well... youre right, but my chick would throw a fit if i made her use the guest account. if i had ubuntu then she will think im using it too which means no problems.

Ubuntu is fine, I just don't see how it'll help you. You don't want them downloading things or checking out your browser history, a guest account accomplishes that.

There aren't a lot of malicious programs written specifically for Ubuntu, but I don't think that'll matter if your still going to be using windows.

k3b will burn it and it should pick up that its an image and burn it accordingly (at least on Kubuntu)

some disc burning apps will just say "burn as image" under 'tools' or whatever usually and thats how you want it done

there is nothing to burning it or installing alongside another operating system, its one of the options when you hit install

There are plenty of tutorials about how to install Ubuntu.  From what I hear it can be tricky installing a dual boot with Windows 7, but I have never tried it.  Just go to Ubuntu.com, I'm sure they have the necessary information.

ubuntu gives you an option to install alongside windows. it is really the easiest install you could do.

im pretty sure you can use parental controls (which i believe are built in) to monitor activity. i think it just sends you like summary emails of the activity with time stamps.

personally though, im not a huge fan.. the ubuntu devs make some really odd design decisions. Linux Mint is based on ubuntu and has a much more "sane" layout and organization. i think its more polished.

since it is based on Ubuntu you still have access to all the Ubuntu documentation and community support.

Yes, but I thought Windows 7 dominates the boot record and overwrites grub2 data?  I don't know much about this, I just remember hearing something to that effect a while back.  You're the Linux guy, so you'd know better.  If I recall there's some order you have to install them in, and other nonsense.  Of course I could be completely wrong, or that might have changed.

if you try to install Windows after Linux this is true. Windows does not touch the mbr once it is installed.

and really, you can install Windows after you install linux.. you just need to reinstall a new boot loader. i know you can do that with the Arch and Slackware install disks.. you just skip all the other steps and go right to the bootloader installation.

or run something like SystemRescueCD and install GAG or some other 3rd party bootloader.

not difficult.. just an extra step.

QFT
Because that is the most friendliest forum for ubuntu help there is. At least after you try and search.
So much knowledge there and if you have a question chances are it has been answered and if not, you will get great help.
