i used to use an electric, couldn't get a close enough shave and ended up irritating my face.
i just got tired of spending so much money on disposable razors (if you're bored you should check out this brief article on the history of disposable razors: Classic Shaving.
the blades that go in my razor cost about 9 cents a piece, are sharp as fuck and last me about 5 or 6 shaves. that plus the whole nostalgia thing (the handle i use is from 1955) makes shaving into an art form. i dig it.

It will help steady your hands for innocs and agar wedges later.
I'm all for spreading that level of skill!!

I been shaving with nothing but a double edge razor for 3 years now. I switched to "old school" shaving because I'm very prone to ingrown hairs after I shave. Since I switched over, I now enjoy shaving, and my neck no longer looks like hamburger meat from all of the ingrown hairs I used to get.
I still have the same badger hair shaving brush that I started off with. I have had it for 3 years, and its still going strong!
There are only downside to shaving like this -its the collecting. Since I started shaving like this, I now have a decades supply of various shaving creams/soaps and aftershaves.

I forgot to ask; is that your shaving set up?
Thats a pretty nice Gillette Red Tip Heavy Super Speed. I really like shaving with vintage razors. I have 3 razors now -one modern Murkur, and 2 vintage Gillettes -a Gillette Super Adjustable and a Black Super Speed (I think).
I'm guessing thats a Vulfix brush? I only have one brush, but my Vulfix is still going strong after 3 years of use.

yes, that is a pick of my setup. took the pic this morning. i bought that redtip off ebay a few months back for around 20 bucks! good eye on the brush, it certainly is a Vulfix, the Grosvenor 404 to be exact. bought it a month ago and have really been digging the half badger/half boar mix.
i too have noticed the lack of ingrowns since switching to a DE razor.
i bought my bro a 1951 Black Super Speed for christmas, gave him a pack of my Derby blades and taught him how to shave.
i've heard about the whole "collecting" aspect of DE shaving. i'm too practical and broke to spend much on shaving accessories. i would dig a nice aftershave but i'll have to save up for that.
@Pris thanks for the link. i didn't even bother searching since i was only looking for an excuse to show off my setup

If you suffer from ingrown hairs or irritation when shaving, I would definitively make the switch. Join a shaving forum, and they can point you to trustworthy sites where you can purchase your supplies from -you probably wont find many brick-and-mortar stores that sell safety razors, good quality shaving brushes, or even double-edged razor blades.
The Badger and Blade has a pretty good forum and a product review section for "old school" shaving. They also have a pretty good Marketplace in their forum where you can buy and trade shaving supplies from other memebers.
There are many other wet-shaving forums out there to choose from. There is even Straight Razor Place if you want to take the straight razor route. They too also have a great user marketplace, I bought my straight razor from a member there.

I use an old Merkur Slant Bar. When I say old, I found my cup, brush, and razor in my grandparents garage and both cup and razor were corroded. Cleaned em up, and now I love this style of shaving. I have very sensitive skin, and this razor makes life that much better. It cuts thru any days worth in t swipes, one on each side. First cut to remove very thick growth, then glide with the other for that baby smooth shave. Just remember to let the weight of the tool do the work and your golden.

I made the switch about 2 or 3 years ago too after reading about it on the Shroomery. I was having horrible problems with ingrown hairs but now I very rarely get them. It's a hell of a lot cheaper too. Since I only save about every 3-4 days, I'm still on the box of 100 Derby razors that I bought 2 years ago. 100 razors only cost me about $38 and they threw in free after shave too.
I haven't bought a brush and cup yet, I just don't see the necessity.

Buy a brush, you will enjoy it. I got my Vulfix brush for around $30, and I think its worth every penny. Not only do the shaving soaps last for an incredibly long time, they also smell much better and have a nicer lather than canned shaving cream. Don't buy the cheap brushes with a wooden handle that you can sometimes find in pharmacies for under $10, the bristles are too stiff, and the wood handles will crack from soaking up water.
I havent bothered with a shaving mug ether, I just use a cheap plain white "rice bowl" that I bought at Walmart. I find its the perfect size to use with my brush to wisk up a good lather with.
