Identification Please
    #1383035 - 03/17/03 08:10 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

After a few rains in sunny California, i can find many mushrooms in my backyard and whatnot, However, i've never seen one quite like this one. My first thought was deformity, closer inspection of the stem shows that the stem splits at the base of the cap as if to produce two mushrooms, yet the cap is still joined in the middle. The smell of the mushroom was very potent, and almost fruity. Amazing smelling mushroom indeed, growing in a very wet mud, with moss surrounding. Purple in color with the stem being purple/white. Thanks for all the help, happy hunting.

How i found it...

Thanks again

after some more talks with him, he broke the mushroom and said it had a very fruity smell. Very pleasant, best mushroom he'd ever smelled.

He's spore printing it now. I'm pretty sure it's a blewitt. Not much else in season that looks like that. According to my books anyhow.

Yup, those sure look like blewits, and the rest of the description sounds right. The spore print will be important in verifying the ID. There are also several species of Cortinarius which are similar in appearance, but they would be coming up at an unusual time right now.

Please let us know what color the spore print is.

Happy mushrooming!

That confirms the ID as blewits, Clitocybe nuda. They are edible, and considered choice by some people. The book description of the spore print color is pinkish buff.

Thanks for coming back with a post and letting us know.

Happy mushrooming!
