The Wrong Jars?
    #1380867 - 03/16/03 12:28 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

My Grandma went to the grocery store today and bought a box of Ball Brand 12 Half Pint Tapered Jars.....she told me that by just looking at them they didn't look "wide mouthed" at least not severly noticably.....I looked at them for her and they kinda looked wide mouthed but not the the point where it's obvious to the eye.....so I looked up "tapered" in the dictionary and it said "getting narrower at one end"....so I'm assuming that if my Grandma got 1/2 pint TAPERED jars that she has found the correct type of jar for her mushroom cakes, correct?

Those are the right ones, Ball Wide Mouth jars are short and wide. Ball regular tapered jars aren't as distinguishable unless you have it sitting right next to a regular canning jar.

So the regular tapered ones will work just as well as the wide mouthed ones right LightBright?

if you are using cakes then you want WIDE MOUTH jars since your cakes won't come out if you have tapered.

if you are just going to use them as casings then the tapered is fine since you can use a sterile spoon to break up the cake

Dannyboy - just look at it this way. Is the opening of the jar the same size or bigger than the bottom? If it is then the jars will work. If the opening is smaller than the bottom then they are wrong for CAKES.

If your jar looks like this then you are fine:

Tapered jar?

Here are some other pictures of possible jars.

Regular jar?

Wide Mouth Jar?

Don't return them. Ball doesn't make a shouldered jar that is tapered. Your fine. Ball calls short, stubby jars Wide Mouth and jars that are suitable for cakes shoulderless (of course jars can be wide mouth AND tapered AND shoulderless)

Psilosinner...thanx for the pictures, my grandma purchased the same exact jar that was found in your Tapered Jar Link......so with that I am happy. I also made a little test:

I took a pencil and outlined the bottom of the jar and then flipped it upside down and outlined the top of the jar....I cut the circle from the bottom of the jar out and placed it on the outline of the top of the jar and indeed the top is about 1/4 inch bigger than the bottom of the jar....so I am fine...phew!

Thanx guys my headache is gone now....

if you are going to birth the cakes, the jars cannot be tapered.

the reason is, is that the cakes must be able to come out of the jar in one piece when the jar is flipped upside down.

if the jars are tapered, when they are flipped upside down, there is not enough width of opening to allow the cake to slide out, do you get what im saying ?

if the jars are widemouthed, they have ample room to slide out, when turned upside down.
