What is the Solution?
    #1380535 - 03/16/03 10:19 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

I went to the anti-war protest yesterday in DC. Very good time, I even got to laugh at the pro-war demostrators saying "Go to Cuba you hippie commies!" Anyway I was thinking, what should be the solution to Saddam Hussein. He is a horrible fucking person and should not be in power. However I am vehemently against war, and I think the reasons Bush has laid out for attack are half-assed conjured bullshit that preys on Americans fear. However, I do think that the inspections process is total bullshit and an utter waste of time. I think it is naive to think that the process is working effectively to rid him of those weapons. Does anyone else feel like this? Me and some friends have been discussing it since coming back from the protest. Indict Saddam on war crimes? Have a big ass inspection force? Disengage entirely? This is such a complex situation. Also I just want to point out how many more new problems would spring up following the imminent invasion and occupation. Or should we concentrate on "real" problems like, another country who threatens us weekly with nuclear weapons. So basically Im asking, what should be the solution to Saddam Hussein, as well as other dictators in the world that are just as bad? I think military invasions are the wrong way to change things. Any ideas?

First of all, Shrub has already declared war, so the question is academic. However, in order to justify a war there must be an iminent threat, which Shrub has failed to adequately demonstrate, irregardless of the presence of WMDs. This idea of charging Saddam Hussein with war crimes is sheer hippocrisy and projectionism, since by the legal standards established at Nuremburg after WW II, Shrub would be guilty of war crimes and not Saddam. This pattern of projection is also evident in Shrub's accusation that Saddam is trying to blackmail the world with WMDs when the biggest blackmailer is the Shrub. The moral of the story is that Shrub and his gang are thugs; and they need to be treated as such.

Maybe I can't read since I've been gone for a week or so, but where exactly in that link did it say that Bush has declared war?

Oh, to the origional poster....... why don't we just put a huge bounty on Saddam's head, like say 10 million dollars, hell make it 50 million.

Good questions. Nice to see people with open minds thinking.

Plug this into the equation- What do you really know about Saddam Hussein? What do you really know about any of the information that the media is handing you?

If you live in America please don't forget that you live under a government that still has not even allowed the people it serves to view the Warren Commission Reports. To me this is kind of a big deal. We had a president shot and then the circumstances were quickly as possible swept under the carpet. They don't even know where JFK's brain is. How do you lose a brain of a president from the National Archives ?

I try not to buy anything that is being reported to much though I pay major attention to it. I try to figure out the difference between what they are telling me and want me to hear, and try to figure out the potential reasons why they want me to believe a certain thing, then I can get a better picture of what they are really up to....

I know that sounds more than a little paranoid but I tend toward being an experentialist anyway...... (someone who views thier experience as thier basis for reality)......

From The U.S. Constitution...
Article. I.
Section. 8.
Clause 1: The Congress shall have Power ...
Clause 11: To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;

". . . The power to declare war, including the power of judging the causes of war, is fully and exclusively vested in the legislature . . . the executive has no right, in any case, to decide the question, whether there is or is not cause for declaring war."
James Madison - 1793

The power to declare war is vested in the Congress. war has not been declared in the U.S. since WWII.

It doesn't. Lefties seem to frequently exaggerate, stretch the truth, or just plain make things up.

I agree that "Shrub has declared war" is not precise usage of "declared war", especially not according to the US Constitution; however, a recent court case has established that Shrub has the constitutional mandate to wage war. The result of the Azores summit was that the invasion will proceed unless either Saddam takes exile before tomorrow (3/17) evening; the only UN resolution Shrub will accept is one that would authorize the invasion anyway.

Sorry, I meant to say that Sadam should be charged with crimes against humanity. This he is clearly guilty of.

Shroomism and I were there. We were hoping we'd run into some Shroomerites, but we knew we had no way of telling who was who. We should have set something up.

It's great to see that another from the Shroomery was at the protest. I was also there. The reason for the protest was noble; stop a crime before it happens.

There was an unfortunate part... While many spoke against aggression towards a country who hasn't done anything to us (the U.S.A), there were way too many people talking about subjects that had nothing to do with stopping aggression.

I will only give a glimpse of one: One group wanted to talk about education in the United States. While I totally agree that most government schools are atrocious, they blame poor test results on 'racism'. One point that they made was that in Washington, D.C., the test scores are horrible and that is because of racism. Now for facts: The DC government (including the school board, etc.) is a majority black. The DC public school system serves a black majority student body. The DC school district spends more money than (I believe) any district in the US.

Where is the racism? Where is the necessity of bring such subjects into a protest against aggression?

PS, I'm a DC native and resident.

War is the only way out. You can't have treaties without means of enforcment, and Saddam's regime is too deeply seated to simply remove with a couple key assassinations.

I mentioned that as well. As Spiffy always says, it's important to stay focused. Everyone at that rally isn't in favor of freeing Mumia Abu Jamal.

Personally I was pretty pissed that every issue besides war was talked about and pushed in our faces, while we were there to oppose war. Hopefully next time it will focus on what needs to be focused on. When you guys are talkign about the little girl, are you discussing the kid that spoke? I thought that was a little below the belt, and unnecessary, albeit a very humourous speech
