CAKES NOT PINNING... PANIC ENSUES!
    #1380208 - 03/16/03 08:42 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

alright, my neighbor left his cakes in the jars for about a month and 2 weeks, and recently put them in the terrarium... he's using perlite for the humidity, and it's been 3 days, but still no signs of anything... Some cakes have a litle bit of yellow shit on them, is that good? He also split two of the cakes open so they will have more surface area, and noticed that the inside was black... does this matter? could it be because he left them in there long enough, or too long? Do the cakes have to fully colonize to start pinning, and what do you reccomend that i do??? please respond asap

black inside??? that doesn't sound to good.

Mycelium has to switch from getting nutrients mod to producing fruits mod. It will take some time so have some patients.. sometimes they can be stuburn and take quite a while. If the cake isnt full colonized that a very bad thing, that part will be prone to contams.. I suggest just cutting that piece out with a sterile knife/spoon.

The yellow stuff sounds like "myc. piss." nothing to worry about. But the black I just dont know.. sounds lke rotting, cut it away if possible. If it's truely just dark dark blue, it may mean you need more hydration.

it almost looks like the spores didn't get all the way in and fully colonize... Like, it looks like the vermaculite/ brown rice mixture isn't getting colonized... how might my neighbor go about cutting out the black shit?

Was there any air exchange when the cake was colonizing.. how long did you wait until you saw the outside complete? You can just cut it out.. Plastic spoon wil probably work well enough. Just spray some alc. on it or lysol, anything that kills germs should be sufficient. Do it in semi sterile condition, mycelium can ward off contams pretty well, but not soo much if contams get a hold of uncolonized substrate

he waited a month and two weeks from innoculation... the outside was complete, and then he waited a little more than a week
