Question about Windows 7 compatibility

My wife's computer died, and I have to get her a new one. I'm running XP pro(media edition) on my machine, and it looks like the new machines come with win 7 installed. One thing I'm worried about is we use a home network, wired through our router.
I save all my business invoices/documents to a folder on my computer and also on hers, so we always have two copies. It's also important for her to be able to surf my hard drive from her computer and the other way around, since we both take calls for our business.
Does anyone know of issues that will arise if I'm trying to surf files on her win 7 machine or she's trying to access my XP machine? We still use office 2000 for our spread sheets and invoices, and I really don't want to pony up any more dough than necessary. RR

I agree. Vista through a fork in the road too, but my experience Win 7 has actually been decent, for MS anyway. I recommend setting up a shortcut (i believe is what Windows calls them) that points to the IP address or computer name (if the ip address changes) of you wife's machine...that way you can skip the whole run type '//x.x.x.x'.

RR. one thing I can tell you, though antecdotal, that might put you somewhat at ease, is that when I went from my laptop to a Vista desktop installation I had all sorts of permissions issues that were hellish to sort out. My XP and Vista install were both legal windows copies that used no unusual formatting, configuration, no encryption, no password for the operating system user accounts, and so forth, yet it was still a mess I never was able to completely resolve.
Just a few months ago, however; I did a fresh install of Windows 7 64, and have been experiencing no problems accessing the mirrored partitions I copied to the new hard drives from the old Vista machine, even the documents folder from the Vista system drive which I plopped right down in the Windows 7 system drive with no issues.
I realize file sharing issues can encounter seperate problems, but its been my experience that permissions issues of the files themselves have not been the nightmare I experienced in the past.
Good luck!

I have an extremely mixed network environment that includes a Win7 Laptop. It has no issues seeing or being seen. The only speed bumps I hit adding Win7 to the mix were some incompatibilities with ancient networked hardware such as printers and scanners. I had no problems getting fileshares or streams to work.
