I was thinking the same thing- maybe the Conspiracies and Coverups forum?  :awesomenod:

There's a lot of physics being discussed in there   (you too cortex)

Now, that's just cruel, how could you submit our good friend commie to that :smirk:

Ah, I appreciate the thought, but I certainly wouldn't have the patience that commie has.

I just noticed you are a mod, how long has that been going on?

Been going on for a few days now.  Chem forum didn't have a mod really for a while.  I PM'd loki for the invite, and now I'm a mod

> It is nice to see you take the time to help somebody understand something new and it is nice to see somebody try to understand something new.  To me, that is really what this forum is about.

I also enjoyed the read. Best anti-gravity thread ever  I am sometimes amazed by the quality and knowledge we have in this forum, on a drug based website.

so if you lifted something when the moon was overhead, and let it fall when the moon was directly below,  would it not perform more net work?

Not really, dont forget that you are also pushing on the earth with your feet and you are also pulling on the moon with the gravity of your object.  This makes the situation tricky as the distance and thus the forces between each of the three objects is constantly changing and they are all constantly doing work on each other.  But no matter how you move the object around, the moon and earth will react such that the center of mass stays put and all work done within the system will net to zero.

I don't buy this...

The moon/earth hold tremendous amounts of kinetic energy.

How could it net to 0 when the tides create friction in which some inevitably radiates into space?

Even if it does net zero, the system still performs work which is the definition of energy.

Quote:

Definition: Energy is the capacity of a physical system to perform work

Sounds like energy to me...

I think this concept is more along the line of what Tesla talked about...

Yea, tidal energy works that way like you mention.  The effect of using tidal energy causes the moon to move further away from the earth, which even though that gives it more gravitational potential energy it has less kinetic energy because it orbits slower.

But what if we used magnets?  (Sorry, I couldn't resist...)
