Socal Chants

Hey everyone, I am new here and to mushrooms in general. I went hunting today in Ventura county and managed to stock up on some nice golden Chants.

I also found some Helvella lacunosa. I think I'll try a few...
Any idea what these things are? They were way too wet/messed up a for a spore print. They are huge, have a veil and tan colored gills.

Nice finds. Chanterelles are common in Santa Barbara but very rare much further south.
Your other mushrooms are Armillaria.

Thanks! Too bad that looked so crummy. I wouldn't mind some honeys... I'm about an hour and a half south of Santa Barbara. I guess there are a few Chants down here as well.

Very beefy Chantrelles you have found yourselef! Makes me long for next August... Nice job. Good luck with those H. lacunosa, I've heard a few people get some gut bombs from them.

Thanks! I decided to dry out the H. lacunosa (they dried out REALLY quickly) and save them until I'm a bit more brave or find out more about them. I read a thread where someone said something about carcinogens...

This observation from last february which I made on the way back from the san diego fungus fair is the furthest southern known location of C. californicus on the distribution map.

Could there just be a lack of mushroomobserver users in my area?

Absolutely there is a lack of mushroomobserver users in your area. We really need more. Norcal is covered pretty well with some regular posters who really know what they are doing, but there are no regular posters in southern california.

Guess that means more for me . I went out again today. This is from one tree! Now that I have a ton of these, how can I make sure that they grow throughout the season and in years to come (cutting vs. twisting, how much do I take etc.)?

I'm jealous.
Although the advice oft-repeated here for psilocybes is to cut instead of twist, the advice I've always heard for chanterelles, including from professional hunters, is to twist and pull.

Thanks! That's one vote for twisting and pulling (which I heard as well and have been doing). How much should be left, and do the one left keep growing or just get soggy and die?
I just had some Chanterelle tempura. It was amazing...

You can leave some or not leave any, does not really matter.
You can make spore water with some and dump that under coast live oak if you want to spread them. You can use the wash water from washing your mushrooms or mix some of the more mature mushrooms with water to make it.

That sounds like a good idea. I have an oak tree in my backyard...

Well THAT is good to know. Thank you, again Alan for your knowledge. I wish I knew this before I picked my motherload of chantrelles this fall.. But live and learn, right! It's interesting that you say to spread them around Coast Live Oak... I have a feeling any indigenous oak stand will support this same type of growth. I will at least say that the most epic chantrelle spot I ended up coming across was only miles from my own home, located in an Oak forest. I had no idea that Oak forests supported chantrelle growth, I hadn't even gone out to look for chantrelles that day! I unfortunately found them a bit late, as when I found them the most had been past their prime. However, the specimen I found were MASSIVE golden chantrelles, many which were well over TWICE the size of the specimen which I had been picking earlier in the season up in the conifer forests of Mary's Peak.

Found a new spot today. I crumbled up some of the Chants that didn't look very good and threw the pieces around. Does that sound like a good way to do things?
