Bearded tooth, right?

I found this on a water oak log today. It's a bearded tooth/Hericium erinaceus right? Spore print is underway, but I thought I might not need to bother. I'm glad I found it now because we're gonna have a hard freeze tonight.

For sure, too bad such a little guy. I agree it might have had trouble with a hard freeze at that size. Once larger, they can handle them ok if its not for too many nights in a row. Enjoy!

Verrry nice! There seems to be a lot of Hericium popping up right now. At least, Central Cali and on south.
How cool would it be to see a time lapse video of hericium growing??

Creepy looking. Creepy tastes good.
-------------------- In ancient times, when demons roamed with man, They hunted, loved and lost, hand in hand, As time went on, the difference between them faded. You couldn't tell anymore, demons and man were related, and some would say the same, but who would like to claim? In time, Gods had even forgot, Demons, too, once love had sought. In times recent I remember, Once I was a man, In my heart I had an ember, I'll relate the best I can but it was snuffed, one distant December. And yet here I stand, no flesh, no bones, no seed or semen, All that's left is this Demon.

It reminds me a bit of lobster or crab. With a fragrant wild mushroom overtone. Its pretty hard to explain. It can even be overbearing if its not paired well (or boiled a bit first). One of my favorite ways to prepare is to simmer the shredded Hericium in cream for a few minutes before the saute. This seems to mellow out that fragrant flavor a tad, allowing it to pair better with lighter foods like eggs. Did that just this morning with some I picked yesterday... Mmmm
