colonizing monotub- trashbag or no

Ive heard that the trash bag over the monotub while colonizing is outdated I guess since light isnt one of the pinning triggers. So I just need an expert to tell me what to do because ive got a monotub sittin here in a trash bag tied up ready to colonize. Should I leave it in there but poke some holes? Should I take it out and put the lid on? Idk what to do.

Just depends on personal preference & how well your sub is colonizing. I'd leave it in the bag for a week, check on it & if it's done nothing, take it out & put the lid on. You basically want to make sure that your myc is getting enough CO2 while letting enough out. I know one of the guys in AMU tried a new method of putting GE holes on top of his lid (2 1-1/4" holes I think) with poly disks on top or under the lid, which ever you prefer. His name is Boris, check his gallery. He said that he started his new style in a bag; it did nothing after a week. Then, he took it outta the bag, and it colonized perfectly.

no bags, my tubs colonize fine in light as long as the holes are plugged tight with polyfil. when it's time to fruit unpack the holes some.

I always use a bag, but my tubs are typically MSG build..lots of little holes. It's not really necessary if you can restrict air another way. I've completely sealed some of my monotubs and taped the lids shut, they seem to hold enough air to colonize.
The one time i didn't seal off a monotub, it started fruiting at about 70% colonization, but it was mixed with a high spawn ratio and I think that had something to do with the premature fruiting as well.
You dont need to block light, you do need to block FAE. Gas Exchange doesnt hurt, but IME it's not totally necessary either if your tub has a lot of air sealed in it.

So my msg has two trash bags covering it (one won't fully cover the msg), one on each end. That should be enough for the tub to keep co2 level high and some gas exchange?

I'd think you would be ok.

I usually don't cover my tubs, but I don't see any problem in doing so

the only time i use a trashbag is if i have to hide it for some reason. there is enough air trapped in a sealed mono to provide its own ge.
