a buddy of mine explained a little to me last night about dual booting with Ubuntu/ Windows and it seems like something i would be interested in.
my chick always finds away to fuck with my computer... accidentally. i would like to set up Ubuntu for her and windows for me.
i know i need to download U then burn it to a disk then run that program, but thats pretty much it.
could some one throw a quick 1-2-3 how to and what let me know what programs i will need to allow this to work?
thanks

you install windows first, then install linux on another partition.
i remember it was a real pain in the ass to remove linux if you just wanted windows because linux overwrites the mbr.

dude you burn the iso to a cd, i believe power iso or something similar is what you want, then reboot your computer from cd and follow the command prompts unbunto will automatically partition your hd... real painless..

It's fairly easy to install ubuntu. If you have installed windows you will have no problems. Another option if you have the hardware requirements, would be to run ubuntu in a virtual machine. VirtualBox is a free program that lets you run other x86 operating systems within windows or vice versa. A good free iso burning app is imgburn, but poweriso does more I believe like mounting disc.

Simplest way to do it, IMO, is to boot from pen drive.
Follow this simple tutorial.
I have done it several of times. Because it saves me time and from frustrations.

You could just use WUBI, which comes with all Ubuntu installations. It installs it within your Windows filesystem, and dual-boots. It's virtually the exact same installation, with absolutely minimal drawbacks (less efficient use of hard drive, disks spin slightly more etc)
if not, you're gonna need to either install gParted on a flash drive, boot from it, shrink your windows partition, and use the free space to put Ubuntu on, or *try* to use partitionmagic or something on windows (but this is often a real bitch and can lead to a lot of problems)
Question; why are you putting your girlfriend on linux instead of taking it yourself and giving her windows? If she keeps "accidentally fucking with your computer", it doesn't necessarily follow that she's gonna be able to do what she wants on Ubuntu.
Are you gonna wanna do it for her every time she needs to install anything outside of the repo? do you know how?
Google can answer ALL your linux/ubuntu questions of course, but do YOU wanna be the one who fixes every little thing that goes wrong or every little thing she wants to change and doesn't know how?
Personally for me the answer is yes because I'm a obsessed with tech modification, but I assume the rest of the world doesn't necessarily share that quality.

Make sure the computer's BIOS is setup to boot from removable media. i.e. USB/CD/DVD
One other fantastic simplistic way of installing Linux is inside of Windows. Use Wubi if you wish to do this. It will make it easier for you to partition your drive. The installation can be modify within windows, e.g. uninstall/resize partitions.
From experience, I don't recommend using any Linux distribution if you are not a savvy computer user. I mention this because I assume your GF will be using your/her Linux. I have tried on countless occasions introducing "noobie" users to Linux. It kills me every time I have to switch them back to Windows.

I was going to mention WUBI, but I wasn't fast enough.
