Ever perform amatuer surgery?
    #13783662 - 01/13/11 11:03 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I have.

Once I amputated the necrotic leg of a kitten. It lived.

I usually clean my own wounds and stitch them myself if it's doable.

Largest I've done is 7 stitches, which is the largest cut I've had.

Biggest stitch by a doctor was 4 stitches and that was ~13 years ago.

i've given myself stitches before on many occasions when required (doesn't really count as surgery i guess though).

i once had to remove an abscess from one of my rabbits and then continue to clean the hole it left behind for 6 months until he healed. he lived for 4 years after that in my front yard until he was led astray by another rabbit (not mine) and got into rat poison; found him half dead down the street and had to break his neck to put him out of his misery.

maybe none of that counts, but i wanted to be part of this thread.

same... I keep lidocaine and usually silk sutures on hand for events that
require stitches the hardest I'd ever done was the heel of my left hand,
it's really hard working 1 handed on a project like that

My father is a surgeon and every time someone (in the family) is sick or wounded he will say, "Bah, it's fine".  So, I rarely go to the doc (as he rarely does) and as such, I have removed, stitched and cleaned a faire share of things; only on myself.  I use Sailor Jerry's as my anesthetic.

That's impressive; the neck breaking part.

i cried like a baby before, during, and after the whole neck breaking thing. he was a very special bunny that i had formed a very strong bond with. he would come hopping to me when i called his name and snuggle with me on the front lawn and give me kisses on the cheek and roll over so i could rub his belly.

it was one of, if not the hardest thing i've ever had to do.

This reminds me of my rabbit breeding days in highschool (I was a weird kid...but anyway). I had one with a huge abscess on its neck. I remember squeezing the puss out and coming out like toothpaste. He died of a heatstroke I think before the abscess ever healed. I also had one that needed to be put down. I forget exactly why but i remember it was having stillborn babies and seemed to be in a lot of pain and dying slowly. Now it's bugging me cause I cant remember exactly what was wrong... My brother tried to snap its neck, but just broke it's back instead. Realizing he had to do something quick since it was in even more pain then, he strangled it to death.

Felt like sharing.

actualy, shit. I just forgot, I had a gf of 5 years.  She wasn't crazy but until yr 4, but one night, I got a call and she said, "get home now, I need help... bad" all calm but serious as can be.  I ran home (2 miles) from my friends drunk and high and when I opened the door she was sitting in a huge pool of blood on my bed just staring at the wall.

I sat next to her and looked where all the blood was from.  Her legs and chest were badly cut (.5"-1" deep).  I grabbed a clean gauze and rags and told her to press them on the wounds and held two myself.  I asked how much she had drank concerned about etoh's ability to prevent clotting and she responded, "none.. but I was depressed becuase I know you have been cheating on me.  I ate a bag of your dried mushrooms though". ( I keep all my mushrooms in .5-1 oz bags)

I cleaned her up, removed some shit that was in the cuts and stiched a few up.  Turns out she thought I was out fucking around (wasn't) and the psilo got the best of her.  She took a razor blade from my DMT kit and slit herself open as hell (who knows how much DMT got in through the cut to boot).  I just held her for 4+ hrs until she started to wain and fall asleep.  Checked her heart reate and pressure twice in 2 hr.s after that.  Slept for 2 hrs and went to class.
