bulk pinning
    #1375533 - 03/14/03 08:35 AM (21 years, 20 days ago)

When my neighbor cases BRF cakes or birdseed he usually gets a pretty full pinset. When he cases straw and dung, he tends to get much larger but far fewer pins and fruits.

He is casing both with coir and verm, same incubation, same misting, same ratio of substrate depth to casing depth. So what gives?

Yes, they are cased in coir/verm just like his birdseed and his BRF cakes.

The straw/dung casings are in plastic tubs, about 12"x20"x5" deep. The BRF casings and the birdseed casings are usually put in breadpans that are 4"x8"x3" deep. My neighbor says the birdseed and the BRF casings pin and fruit like crazy, while the straw/dung puts out only a few huge pins & fruits. They are incubated and fruited identically.

He wants big AND plentiful!

Coir is made from shredded coconut husks. When mixed with verm it's an excellent casing material.

Does your neighbor case before or after the first flush? This guy I know has a lot of the same questions as your neighbor.

That is something my neighbor had not considered!

He has always cased his straw/dung immediately following full colonization. It will be interesting to see the result of an uncased first flush.

Thanks for the inspiration. 5 mushies for you.

my theory:

poop and straw absorbs moisture more readily then brf cakes, which reduces moisture in adjacent stagnant air between casing + cake surface, therefor reducing knots+pins, i suggest some circulation of 100% rh air.... unless your already doing this, in which case i have no suggestions

pm me the results if you decide to try the circulation method.

"A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."

I believe Roadkill prefers not to case before the first flush, but many others recommend the opposite. This guy I know hasn't decided yet, and the day is fast approaching.

Coir is amazing even on its own. A lot less messy than vermiculite as well.
