What is the difference between sphagnum peat moss, and peat moss? Once i asked a lady at the local garden center and she told me it was very different, then i went the other day and asked her again, and she said there is no difference! =[ So please, can someone explain! Thanks.

"The difference between PEAT and Spagnum moss or "peat moss" is that PEAT is the decomposed remains of mosses, sedges, and other bog plants." taken from: http://fins.actwin.com/aquatic-plants/month.9609/msg00039.html edit: and spagnum peat moss is just decomposed spagnum moss as opposed to the wide variety of mosses that can be in peat.

So for casing there would really be no difference between "sphagnum peat moss" and "peat moss"? Its just that most teks say "peat moss" So that could be easily confused as something totally different.

i think peat moss and sphagnum peat moss are the same thing. but peat is something different. sphagnum is what i have used in 50/50 teks but i find coir/verm to work a bit better. although the only thing i hate bout coir is you gotta use a saw or a chisel to cut chunks off the compressed block.

Try a big pet store. Forest Floor brand is a good one. It'll probably be in the reptile section; it's used as a bedding material. Edit: Try PETCO at: http://www.petco.com/search/mercado_search_results.asp?PN=default&CatEntry=&log=1&entry=forrest+floor -Diploid

i had the same questions - it'd have made more sense if it was called moss peat. sphagnum moss is just a kind of moss, so you're fine. moss is green and fluffy, but when it decomposes into peat, it looks like dark brown sawdusty earth.
i also had the coir / hacksaw dilemma until i realised you can prise sheets of it from the block with a knife, along the long sides. there's a pic demonstrating it in the faqs, by the 60/40 coir/verm casing tek (?another roadkill classic)
hope this helped

Would a 30/30/30 casing of Cow Manure (bought from a garden centere say), verm, and Sphagnum peat moss work?

if you're looking for a casing layer, then i think you should stay away from nutritious stuff like poo. you can spawn into it, but this is different. however, i'm a newbie too, and i have read here sometimes of people who 'case with poo' so what do i know?!
if you have verm, and you have peat, you have the age-old classic 50/50 mixture! don't worry too much about additives unless you have some lime / chalk / oyster shell lying around. 50/50 works - hell, pure verm works!
